As we all know, the Asus EEE 701 PC was created for ease of use and is not made to be a power horse. It claims it comes with a 900MHZ processor, which it does, but the laptop is under clocked to 633MHZ which is a huge hit. It also comes with a weak version of Linux that keeps you incredibly limited to what you can do.
Here is what you need to do to get this thing to run very smoothly so you can watch youtube videos, surf the web, and listen to music at once with no issues.
1.) Upgrade the memory to 1GB. It uses DDR2 memory with support for DDR2 PC2-5300 speeds. All you need to do is unscrew the little cover on the back of the laptop, pop out the memory and click the new one in. This can be had for really cheap. Check out newegg for great deals.
2.) Uninstall the limited linux and use your favorite OS. Check on eee-pcforums or on eeepc forums by doing a google search for eeepc forums, they have tutorials that explain step by step what to do. Don't run anything too power hungry, max I would possibly is vista, xp runs great on it.
3.) Download eeectl. search eeectl on google click the first link, download install. It will show up in the bottom right corner, it allows you to overclock to 1ghz and full control of fan speeds and brightness for the screen.
4.) buy an 8-16gb sd card. Install all of your music documents and other files on this sd card. When you install programs such as word, excel or any other program, find a portable version of it, check out portableapps.com this allows you to download a program, but when you uninstall it it does'nt leave all the registry keys and junk behind which over time slows down your computer. With portableapps if you delete the folder, the program is completely uninstalled and gone. Install your portable apps onto your sd drive so the hard drive stays clean and free of crap that could slow down this little pc.
These things are all you need and my eeepc 701 runs like a gem on windows xp pro. As long as you don't need to game, photoshop or use any programs that are power hungry, the 701 does email, web, youtube, applications, and everything without a hitch.
Oh and if you want more battery life look for extended life batteries for eee pc 701 online, i got one for 35 bucks and i get about 5 hours of battery life!
So as well all know this pc gets a 5/5 if you come into the purchase knowing it isn't going to be a work horse. If you thought it was going to be powerful than unfortunately you weren't well informed. The way the computer comes stock and what Asus intended it to be used for, it gets a 4.5/5. For someone who wants to be able to do all the basics with it, it gets a 3.5/5. With these simple easy and cheap tweaks done, it definitely deserves a 5/5.
Hope this helps all of you.
