There are 3 types of color enhance process; Irradiation, Coating and HPHT
IRRADIATION- This process uses high-energy electron saturation (electron accelerator technology) to alter the appearance and color of diamonds, using a low color diamond exposing the diamond to a stream of fast electrons,
Thanks to modern technology, it is possible to irradiate natural diamonds safely and get all range of colors like: yellow, blue, green, red and pink, so that any natural diamond can looks like a much higher quality natural stone. This is a similar process that is being used in preserving food.
The irradiated color diamonds are the beautiful diamonds are absolutely safe to use, and require no special attention under normal wear and tear. The color treatment is not subject to change over time.
HPHT-High Pressure High Temperature treatment can improve the color of certain types of brown diamonds and increase their value, the color enhanced diamond will be heated up to a very high temperature under a very high pressure
This process was first used to turn yellowish diamonds into more fancy colored diamonds but now it also used to turn brown diamond into more desirable colorless diamonds
COATING- it’s an artificial layer that is put on the pavilion of the diamond, which is in the bottom of the stone, and creating the desired color. The result will give the diamond the similar tone like the no-enhanced one.
Thing to avoid:
1. Don’t expose the diamond to temperature over 150°F. Inform the jeweler that the diamond is a color enhanced diamond before any work is done -If this type of color enhanced diamond is exposed to excessive amounts of heat it might affect the color. You need to inform the jeweler that the diamond is a color enhanced diamond before any work is done. Having that knowledge will help the jeweler to protect the diamond and to decide on the best treatment for the enhanced diamond.
