Music boxes are a timeless treasure.  Developed in the 18th century, they are still a beloved decoration and entertainment device today.  Vintage music boxes are often handed down from generation to generation, so the sentimental value is immeasurable.  Family heirlooms are often considered priceless regardless of condition.

Music boxes work by activating levers that pluck chords on a modified string instrument.  There are many different styles of music boxes and the complexity often determines the value.  There are also variations in size, ranging from jewelry boxes to piano sized.

Music boxes can be found in many places.  Vintage boxes are often at antique stores, thrift stores, estate sales, and pawn shops.  More widely produced options are available at a variety of retailers both online and in store.

A rare and vintage music box on eBay can cost over $100,000.  The average cost of a generic, mass produced music box is around $10 or $20.  Many children are given music boxes with a ballerina character dancing in a circular pattern to a classical tune.  These can be found easily and for a small investment.

Music boxes are a wonderful decoration and entertainment device.  An antique music box can be a financial investment, but worth it for the historical value.
