"Star Wars : Episode IV" was first seen on May 25, 1977. This was the first episode that was filmed in the Star Wars story and the saga finally came to a close in 2005 with the release of "Star Wars: Episode III, Revenge of the Sith," the sixth movie released in theaters.
While the collection only includes six films, originally George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, wanted to film twelve films. In 1995, after the completion of the original trilogy in 1983, Lucas announced that he would be filming three prequels for the Star Wars series. The three films were released three years apart, the first, Episode I: The Phantom Menace was released in 1999, Episode II: Attack of the Clones was released in 2002, and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith finally arrived in 2005.
The original trilogy takes place nineteen years after the end of Episode III and chronicles the life of Luke Skywalker when he learns that his father was once a Jedi Knight. He runs away with his father's old mentor, Obi Wan Kenobi, and meets Han Solo, a smuggler who takes them to Alderaan where Luke first encounters Darth Vader.
These movies develop Luke's character as he meets Princess Leia, and fights Darth Vader and becomes a Jedi Knight with the help of Yoda. The three prequel films follow the life of Anakin Skywalker, who we now know is Luke and Leias father. These films detail Anakin's life as a child on Tatooine, being taken in by Obi Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn to train as a Jedi warrior and later meeting Padme, the future mother of Luke and Leia.
While the main format of this saga was the films themselves, books, comic books, video games and toys have also been based on the story of Star Wars.
Darth Vader- was the main villain in Star Wars: Episodes IV-VI. During these films he ruled the galaxy under his evil empire and is only controlled by Darth Sidious aka. Senator Palpatine. He's also the father of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa. At the beginning of Episode I, we see him as a child named Anakin Skywalker. He meets Obi Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon who take him to train to become a Jedi. However, as he grows older, he becomes rebellious, marrying Padme Amidala at the end of Episode II and finally becoming Darth Vader at the end of Episode III.
C3P0 and R2D2- C3P0 and R2D2 are droids who appears on the fringes of all six Star Wars episodes. The actor who played C3P0 has remained the same for all of the films, which have spanned twenty eight years. R2D2 and C3P0 have appeared in all six films and play major roles in the lives of the humans around them. It is R2D2's message to Obi Wan Kenobi at the beginning of Episode IV that sets the entire plot in motion.
Yoda- Yoda is a very wise Jedi master who was voiced by Frank Oz for the original trilogy. Yoda appears in all six of the Star Wars films and helped to train Obi Wan Kenobi before Qui-Gon took over. He trains Luke in Episodes IV, V, and VI and helps him to become a Jedi Knight.
Obi-Wan- This character first appears in Episode I as the apprentice to Qui-Gon Jinn and later takes over the training of Anakin Skywalker after his master's death. He also is responsible for helping to train Luke in the beginning of Episode IV before his death at the hands of Darth Vader.
Trivia : For the re-release of Episode VI on DVD, George Lucas changed the original actor for Anakin in the celebration scene at the end of the movie and replaced him with Hayden Christensen as he appeared in Episode III just before he became Darth Vader.
