Here are some ideas for choosing the right baby name for your child.

Choose the right Baby Name for your child!

Don't feel that you have to stick with family tradition when choosing the right baby name. If you really like a certain baby name, use it. Once your baby is born that name will be with them forever. So why would you settle for just any name.

Think of your child's future.

Don't mark your child with a name that will haunt him or her for the rest of their life. Many children are picked upon at school and the rest of their lives because of their name.

The initials can be devastating by themselves.

Make sure the first initials of the first, middle and last name do not spell anything undesirable. There are times that initials alone are required through life and having initials that spell obscene words can be very embarrassing. Most people do not look at the initials when making their baby name choices. For instance, my Son's initials are D.R.B. - We call him Dr. B all the time :) We keep telling him that he WILL be a doctor - and there it nothing he can do about it...it's fate! Oh and Peter Ilya Goodman's initials are going to be P.I.G.

Keep your family member's names in the forefront of your mind.

You may want to name your child after a grandparent, parent or other family member. Maybe that's tradition and you want to keep that tradition. If all the firstborn boys in your family are named Thomas, you may want to continue the tradition. Or you might want to look at your family tree and choose the name of someone a little further back. That's fine, but first make sure a cousin, nephew or other family member is not using the name. It can be very confusing for everyone if there are two people in a family with the exact same name.

Ask around the family to make sure other relatives are not considering the same name. Other family members may have a special bond with a grandparent or relative and they are saving that name for their child. Work with them to create a variant name for their child or yours. Be mindful of other family members.

My husband and I agreed that our first boy and girl born would have our middle names.  So my Daughter's middle name is Lynn (my middle name) and our second born's middle name is Scott (my husbands middle name).  Once we got to our third, we were a little stuck because by that time, my Brother & Sister-In-Law also gave their son the middle name of Scott.  In fact, he is a JR so he has the exact name of his father...who's father's middle name was Scott who passed the middle name down to my Brother-In-Law and Husband...and it goes on. :~)  Too confusing - so we stopped there.

My mother stopped the traditional "Ann" as a middle name when my sister and I where born.  Every single girl on my Mother's side of the family was given the middle name of Ann...but that was quickly shot down by her and we both received our very own middle names.  Lynn and Louise

My Sister who was named after Sandy Koufax - (the professional baseball player).  Is yet to produce her own offspring, thus the reason I am writing this.  Her hubby and her are considering unique names as well...we will see!  To be continued...

Consider your ethnic background.

This can give your child a sense of heritage without making him share his name with another living relative. Be proud of your heritage by using a name that is part of your ethnic history if you choose to do so.

Don't be too creative with your child's name.

Being unique is sometimes confusing. If you are thinking of an alternative spelling for a name make sure that name exists. Your child will always have people spelling her or his name wrong if their name is not in the normal realm of thinking. It will also be impossible to buy any name-associated product for your child including toys, ornaments and jewelry. You would have to have it personalized, which may mean more money and time. Examples: Variations of Gary can be spelled Garry, not Gari. Our Daughters name is Carrie. We chose to spell it that way, because I wanted a long name and this was the only name hubby liked. He wanted to spell it like "Kari", but we eventually agreed to the longer spelling of the name.

Although unique names are becoming more the norm. Think about all of those celebrity baby names. Artists are, by nature, creative and often give their children very creative names! Here are a few examples…

Consider religion.

Some people of the Jewish and Christian traditions use the Bible as a source of names. This used to be a common way of naming children and is why so many boys are named Matthew, Mark and Joseph.

Try out the sound.

If the last name is Fredenburgh (like my maiden name), you probably want to keep the first name simple. You may also want to avoid combining a first name that ends in a vowel with a last name that starts with a vowel. "Anna Anderson" runs together. Also resist puns and rhymes. Your child must live with the name his whole life.

Make the middle name something special.

Consider using the middle name to honor a family surname. Use of the mother's maiden name as a surname was common in the United States in the middle of the 1800s. Be more creative on the middle name. Use a name that may not work as the first name. This maybe the perfect spot for a relatives name. Have fun with the middle name.

Make choices for both genders.

Even if the ultrasound has told you it's a girl, have a few boys' names in your back pocket as well. They've been wrong before.  It's important that you have more than one choice for your newborn's name.

It's ok not to have your baby's name set in stone!

My husband and I didn't decide what we were going to name our son until after he was born.  I had it down to two names - Nicholas and Joshua.  I liked the name Nicholas, but my then 4 year old told me we should name him Joshua because of all of the Joshua threes we would drive past when we went ANYWHERE!  Cute idea but the hubby didn't like either ...BUT didn't have any suggestions for a name either.  A few minutes after our son was born, he told me I could choose his name and that he would agree to whatever I wanted...aaawwww, how sweet!!  So I decided on Nicholas Matthew and Matthew is my Brothers middle name so that is the reason for his middle name.

It's also ok to change the name after the baby is born.  If you thought Christopher would be a cute name, but when he was born, you just new he would be a Tyler...well than, "Just do it"...LOL
