Whether you are in business or just for personal pleasure, computers can really be a neck pain at times when it comes to keeping them running efficiently.

Laptops and home based PC (personal computers) can have various operating systems.

The one of choice for me still Microsoft Windows XP

Whether you are using your computer for communication, dating, data-entry, bookkeeping or accounting tasks, games, internet access, you will all encounter some things that do not seem to work correctly or seem somehow quirky.  Mostly, a problem with your computer is physically evident, but at other times a computer will act strange or peculiar.  Slowness / Stickiness of the keyboard interrupt is usually signs that something else is over taxing your keystroke process or working to undermine you keystroke by accumualing pertinent information about your web-surfing habits. Usually It's, been a never-ending mystery to me how the average computer user keeps his/her computer running.  I have a Dell 4550 and Dell 8400 desktop and they both constantly and continuously need updating, cleaning, and rebooting to stay current. I will now have to ad this computer is over 7.5 years old and still running.   I seldom if ever power the computer totally down and have a power backup unit in case of power outages.

Pre-setup is usually the funnest and most exciting part of receiving a new system.  Follow all the recommended steps to hooking up the monitor, mouse, keyboard, printer, and any other device you may have purchased such as a microphone, webcam, scanner, scanner/fax, printer/scanner/fax/copier/message center, digital camera, ipod/iriver/sony mp3 player, or some other input or output device specific to what you wish to do such as install music composition software that you may purchase with an electronic midi-interface organ/piano.  Make sure all the power cords are are secure and no connection was forced or lose because all connections should be pretty tight if straight out of the box usually.

POP-UP BLOCKERS

1. You may need to determine whether you wish to have a third party pop up blocker or not, but if so you will need to disable the one that comes with you XP operating system same as mine.  I think my current pop-up blocker comes attached to my yahoo, but I used to have several others that had been loaded and used at some time in the past on my systems. In order to keep intruders who can spot and access certain ports on your system, you will need a good firewall or you can usually use the one that is within the framework of most operating systems.  If you buy a firewall from a third-party vendor, make sure you understand what kind of protection you are buying and how long your subscription to the updated version of the software is included.  I've been through about six different anti-spyware programs and have determined that a combination of Microsoft Anti-Spyware and Norton Antivirus memory or suspicious file intruder alert Along with MCafee's Firewall Express for my Firewall normally set at Level - Standard Security.  This allows for most web-sites to attach a cookie file to your computer so that it can remember such things specific to either you last user long-in perhaps or other important information about language selection and so forth.

SETTING UP USERS

WINDOWS XP with new updates should allow you set up different session users within the first few steps after your computer validation.

INTERNET CONNECTIONS

There a several good internet services and I've used both DSL phone and Cable Modem.  I believe SBC DSL to be just as good and as fast and many need although I have yet to have much luck in My area with HI-Speed Cable but I've heard that many others around in my area have had no problems.  I you subscribe now at this time I believe ATT.SBC has and introductory offer that will be as good as you can get although Cable access seems to be 3 times more expensive.

USE OF AN INTERNET BROWSER AND WHAT OPTIONS YOU HAVE

You can use a number of internet browser such as Internet Explorer or AIM or AOL or your provider my provide you with a browser that comes packaged within there software bundle along with the modem.  After you get comfortable with the screen layout and have done quite a bit of surfing you my with to remove the temporary internet files that have placed themselves on you local drive and are taking up possibly future space.  If you go to ~ Tools ~ the fifth element on the first grey bar of Internet Explorer then choose Internet Options, under the Temporary Internet Files section, you can choose to Delete Files, The Delete Cookies, and the Clear History Buttons to perform those actions, this way you can keep your computer relatively clean of files that may never be used again (or not).  That is totally up to you and is only a recommendation that I give to you after my 20 years using PCs.

PHONE ACCESS

New services are out there in which allow Televideo Capability to be tied directly through you Computer Internet Access - There are Several companies I can think of such as Vonage, yet it is up to you whether you wish to cancel  you current long distance home phone calling or use the Vonage or some other services which may be still offered for free.

CLEANING YOUR PC

Ever so often, you may wish to Perform a Disk Defragmentation which is usually found under Performance and Maintenance section of you Utilities Area which are naturally found under the CONTROL PANEL off you Green MS-Start Menu.  If you do not see this on the screen after booting then you may need to choose a selected User.

SETTING UP AND MAINTAINING A GOOD INKJET PRINTER OR LASER TONER BASED PRINTER/SCANNER COPIER.

You may have purchased a multifunction printer, in which case all essential manuals and instructions should not be over looked.

GET ACQUAINTED WITH HOW AND WHEN TO USE THE MOUSE TO CLICK - DOUBLE CLICK RIGHT CLICK, DROP AND DRAG ITEM WITH YOUR CURSOR, BLOCKING, COPYING TEXT AND CUTTING TEXT FEATURE BUILT INTO THE SOFTWARE.

This is always usually the first stumbling block for a user and I recommend first time users consider purchasing the pc-cdrom versions of the Video Professor line of Learning Aids that John W. Scherer Sells on TV and the Internet.

GETTING ACQUAINTED WITH EMAIL

Some may never have used email but will need to assign themselves and email account but my have already done so before activating you modem or you may wish to add more emails and/or change your email passwords.

ONLINE BANKING AND OTHER SERVICES

You bank may have a web-site and if so you are going to have fun here.  You may wish to sign up for a normal PAYPAL account if you have not already done so or a NETELLER account.  This can be accomplished very easily by using this PAYPAL link supplied to to for such purposes.  For a merchant account you can use this link

https://www.paypal.com/us/mrb/pal=AC8BQAXAEPC6E

or just type www.paypal.com on your internet browser.   A merchant account will allow you both send and receive funds to and from other members for a small fee per transactions plus have additional services such as taking credit cards and receiving a PAYPAL online debit card that can be used anywhere just like a normal Mastercard charge but but when used as a debit card Paypal will give you cashback on your purchases because of the benefits it offers them as well.  Ebay and Paypal are intertwined, so you will not go wrong if you sign up for Paypal and Ebay, or both.  Paypal will give you access to your on debit card as a well and extend you other products such as a credit card.

You can sign up for a Personal, Premier, or Merchant accounts through Paypal which usually give you more features than the other.

Don't forget a screensaver and changing your desktop by clicking on the main desktop screen and setting up those options.
