Post-wedding life is full of lots of exciting firsts, but for many couples, celebrating their first Christmas as a married couple is at the top of the list. Blending two lives' worth of memories and traditions, however, can come with its fair share of challenges. Even something as "simple" as decorating your home or apartment for the first time - together - can leave you feeling as stuck as a short dog in tall grass. In the hopes of getting you unstuck and on your way to a very merry Christmas, we're sharing our best tips for decorating a newlywed home for the holidays!

Pick a color scheme
Though the blank slate that most couples start with can be overwhelming, it's also a great opportunity! You have the chance to start fresh and build a holiday decor collection that's just to your liking. Don't feel like you have to stick with traditional red and green, either - we love silver and gold; pink, green, and blue; and evergreen and mint.

Start smart
Just like when decorating your house, unless money is no object, resist the urge to make one shopping trip and buy everything at once! Make a list of all the pieces you'd like to add to your decor over time (
nativity scene,
tree skirt,
tree topper, stockings, wreath, etc.) then select just a few pieces you'll purchase this year. That way, you'll ensure you're investing in quality pieces that you'll cherish for the long term instead of expendable items you don't really love.

Choose a tree
If you're not committed to getting a live tree every Christmas, investing in a
quality faux fir is a great way to start off your Christmas decor collection. And don't stop at just one - we love the idea of scattering mini trees throughout the house (bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchen!) to spread the holiday cheer!

Start your ornament collection
Decorating a full-size tree for the first time can make you realize how few ornaments you have! This is one place where we think it's a good idea to buy less expensive items in bulk - say, a 15-piece pack of
colored balls. They'll fill out your tree and add to your color scheme without damaging your wallet.

Grow your ornament collection
Some couples like to start a tradition of giving each other an ornament every Christmas. Others like to add one from every vacation spot they travel to. You can also find really special vintage pieces online that will add sparkle to your collection.

Activate your senses
Taste, touch, sight, smells, and sounds - there's a place for all of them in Christmas decor. Light a
candle, wrap your tree in lights, lay down a faux fur tree skirt, turn on a favorite CD, and set out a plate of cookies - then cuddle up and enjoy with your new husband!
