Bed Linens
An obvious must. I would suggest to bring more than one set so that when you have one in the laundry, you can put the second one on your bed. It would also be nice to change it every now and then and give your dorm room a refreshed look!

Toiletries
Obviously very important, but don't have to be brought over since they can be bought once you arrive at the college at any nearby stores (though you should look to see what stores they have in advanced!) For soap I would recommend liquid soap if you don't already use it. It's much easier and much more comfortable to use in dorm showers than a bar of soap, even if you have somewhere to keep it. And you always run the risk of it falling on those dirty bathroom floors!

Flip Flops
These are super-important. Though, you may not use them on a daily basis, you will need them to shower. I would not recommend going into the bathrooms barefoot. You do not know who's been in there; it is very common in colleges to get Athlete's foot because of walking barefoot in bathrooms.

Desk Lamp & Electronics
Desks lamps are important if you want to do work at night. Though, mostly, you'll only need one if you have a roommate who might be sleeping when you need to be working. However, some people without roommates may enjoy the ambience that the desk lamp provides.
Also, don't forget your electronics. Laptops, tablets, and phones seem to become more useful when you're using them for college-related things.

Hangers
Don't forget to bring or buy hangers. Chances are very high that all of your things won't fit in the dresses that your college provides you.

Laundry Bags
I recommend bags for your laundry more than I do bins because bags take up less space and do the job you need them to.

Storage Boxes/Bins
Here I recommend bins over boxes, because boxes are more likely get worn out and break. I think buying storage bins is a good investment seeing as they will last you for several years. Though, you may be able to get boxes for free from around your college. Ask around!

Shower Caddy
Highly recommended for everyone because it not only helps to keep your things organized, but makes things much easier to carry to and back from the bathroom come shower-time.

Alarm Clock
If you're used to using your phone as an alarm, I would still recommend you get an alarm clock. Get one and place it across the room so that you have to get up to turn it off and don't just hit snooze. You could do this with your phone instead, but let's be honest, who wants to sleep without their phone at their side?
