A Guide to Topps Baseball 1975-1979

Introduction

The purpose of this guide is to help familiarize consumers with the popular Topps Baseball card issues ranging from 1975 to 1979.

The 4 main reasons that cards from the early 1970s currently make a good investment are:

  • Affordability of major HOF legends at the end of their career
  • Affordable and plentiful HOF Rookie cards
  • Interesting and attractive designs
  • Increased pop culture interest in the 1970's

1975 Topps

The 1975 Topps set has always been a popular one, and today remains one of the most solid investments in the hobby.  The 1975 Topps set features unique multi-colored borders that make it stand out when compared to other standard issue cards.  The 1975 Topps set features a wide selection of HOF legends in the twightlight of their career as well as many important rookie cards.  Below is a list of key cards from the set as well as high book value and current market status.

  • #1 Hank Aaron Highlight NM Book $30 - WARM
  • #70 Mike Schmidt NM Book $20-WARM
  • #223 Robin Yount RC NM Book $50 - WARM
  • #228 George Brett RC NM Book $80-WARM
  • #320 Pete Rose NM Book $30-WARM
  • #500 Nolan Ryan NM Book $50-WARM

Status Key

  • HOT - Currently realizing high prices based on increased demand
  • Warm - Stable - the demand may occasionally fluctuate but there has always been a steady demand
  • Cold - Currently selling below the norm indicating lower popularity, however a good investment because of decreased cost

1976 Topps

The 1976 Topps set is one of the most under-rated sets ever produced by Topps.  With regard to design, the 1976 set has a lot in common with the 1973 and 1974 sets in terms of simplicity.  In terms of color scheme the 1976 set shares a lot in common with the 1972 and 1975 sets.  Throw in improved action photography (see Yastrzemski card above for a good example) and you have one of the best designed sets of trading cards ever produced.  The 1976 set has never been a favorite of collectors, however the popularity of the set has improved over the last two years.  Below is a list of key cards from the set.

  • #1 Hank Aaron Record Breaker NM Book $15-HOT
  • #19 George Brett NM Book $30-COLD
  • #98 Dennis Eckersley RC NM Book $25-WARM
  • #240 Pete Rose NM Book $25-HOT
  • #316 Robin Yount NM Book $15-WARM
  • #330 Nolan Ryan NM Book $25-COLD
  • #480 Mike Schmidt NM Book $15-COLD
  • #550 Hank Aaron NM Book $25-HOT
  • Complete Set NM Book $250-WARM

1977 Topps

A well conceived set that takes the design elements from the popular 1971 set --this time with a conservative white border, modernized fonts and a position banner that looks like it came from a 1960s issue.  The set features sharp photography and good use of color, however it is printed on a cheaper paper stock than previous issues and quality control with regard to packaging and centering was poor for this issue.  Eventually this set will increase in value because of its somewhat unrealized condition sensitivity making the 1977 Topps set a fantastic investment!  Below are the key cards from the set.

  • #450 Pete Rose NM Book $20 - HOT
  • #473 Andre Dawson RC NM Book $20-COLD
  • #476 Dale Murphy RC NM Book $20-COLD
  • #650 Nolan Ryan NM Book $30-WARM
  • Complete Set NM Book $225-WARM
