We All Shine On

I love gold. And when I say I love gold, I mean l-o-v-e. This love affair started in a mall jewelry store in the late 1980s, when I chose 14K gold unicorns to be my first earrings. It continued into my marriage, when I shunned the trendy platinum rings for a shiny gold one. It continued into picking my blog’s name, Little Gold Pixel, and it continues to this very day in my home decor. People oftentimes hear “gold” and think “holiday glitz” and/or “gaudy,” but I’m here to tell you it can be modern, tasteful and downright amazing to invite gold into your home. Here are seven modern ways to decorate with gold:

1. Space It Out

Resist the urge to glaze your entire room in gold (the struggle is real for me). And resist the urge to group all of your gold tchotchkes together. Space them out, use them as accents. If you’re on the fence about gold, a side table may be more your speed than an entire gold couch. Yes, I had an MCM gold couch in college. (Yes, it was fabulous.)

2. All About That Brass

Whether you find brass  fruitgiraffes or  sailboats, these small decor items have a lot of visual weight and personality. Remember the rule of threes: group something brass with two other items, preferably not brass or gold.

3. Find the Foil

Gold art prints are a very of-the-now way to add gold to your space. Bonus points for a thin gold frame.

4. Party Time, Excellent!

Let's talk about gold party lights. In my book, these are not just for the holidays. If you string gold party lights along a mantle or hang them strategically in a bookshelf, you can add life and fun to your space year-round.

5. Keep A Simple Color Palette

Gold makes a big statement. It’s best to keep the color palette simple. Consider neutrals with maybe one bright color, or let the gold accents be the star. Drape a Moroccan wedding blanket on your couch, for example, and let it shine.

6. Pick Geometric Patterns

A geometric pattern paired with gold? Definitely trendy and definitely very modern. Try pillows — they are easily changeable so you can toggle when you want to try something new.

7. Mix & Match

Contemporary decor is giving a nod to MCM, so look on both sides of the spectrum. Get current with Jonathan Adler and Z Gallerie. Also search for vintage pieces with keywords such as “atomic,” “Hollywood regency” and “MCM.”
