Andy must make accurate tactical decisions in order to defeat the enemy. As the game progresses, Andy gains the ability to choose tactical advisers. The particular mission can split and differ, depending on which advisers are chosen. Further missions see the Orange Star Army being attacked by two other countries, Yellow Comet and Green Earth. Eventually, all four countries unite to defeat the ultimate enemy, the Black Hole Army. In order to defeat each enemy throughout the different stages of battle, the player must either capture the enemy headquarters or destroy each of the opponent’s units on the map.

Advance Wars is highly acclaimed. It is ranked at number 26 in Nintendo Power’s Top 200 Games list, and has a 93 percent score on GameRankings. Advance Wars was followed up with the release of Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising.
