There are some strong features of the TomTom 720 (fast satellite acquisition and quick route generation), however, it falls far short of being as useful as other GPS units. I purchased the 720 to replace my older Lowrance 500c which is much larger and a much heavier unit. This is important to me as I travel frequently to multiple cities and states for business and must carry a lot of "stuff" along. I expected improvements over the time I have owned the Lowrance in size, speed, database utilities, etc. Well I was greatly disappointed. The points of interest database is ridiculously anemic, including almost nothing and TomTom effectively says you're on your own by suggesting that you search the internet to improve their database short comings. In addition, multiple calls to TomTom support yielded multiple answers to the same questions and they actually sent me the wrong updated maps to fix the random POIs that failed to function. After reloading the entire device (twice) and still experiencing software failures, I asked for a RMA number to return the unit. TomTom 2nd level support (in an extremely condescending way) told me the fact that the POIs don't work on my 720 does not mean the GPS doesn't work so they refused to issue the RMA. WHAT?! People purchase a GPS to find things and places while traveling, but in the mind of TomTom, you will need to know what you need before you ever need it or leave home. You must then manually put hotels, restaurants or stores in the 720 one-by-one in every city or state you may travel to. What a joke! I have since sold the unit after owning it for 3 weeks (at a substantial loss), purchased a new Lowrance 600c and I have all the functionality anyone could need for business travel with a very deep database. Without question, my recommendation would be to RUN, do not walk away from TomTom and their "support" and look at basically any other unit. It's just not worth the hassle or aggravation.
After extensive online research and sampling of actual units, I decided on the 720 if it could be had at a good price. After bidding on 18 units I was successful. Ebay is the best source, but people often get stupid on the bidding and bid more than the street/store price.
The mounting of it is the typical suction cup, and doesn't work on most cars without gluing a big black disk somewhere. Unfortunately, almost nobody sells a replacement disk, except on eBay, and they are stupid expensive, with predatory shipping. It should be about $2 with 41 cents postage. I did find a cup holder mount and a HVAC mount that show some promise, and are reasonable except for shipping.
The unit has a good user-friendly interface & plenty of configurable options. It has a lousy printed manual, and the CD one isn't much better. This is typical of TT & Garmin, though. The accuracy is good, but you would like to edit the POIs as more than a few have gone out of business or moved. Again, this is typical. The computer upload/download is a great feature- only you need to see what changed to have full confidence.
Battery life is excellent, but the quick most used menu buttons should be configurable or easier to find. This is still better than Garmin. TT bought their own mapping company, so they mey have better-more up to date maps for free. We are still checking it out locally for a full evaluation, but it seems to be everything we hoped for. It is too bad that you can't get the latest and greatest technology without the MP3/Bluetooth junk as part of it. Traffic and weather options are available but too expensive unless you live in NY, Chicago, or LA. I would still like to see a really good unit with the best chip and software that was completely user programmable for use. We wwill see how this one performs over the summer season.

First the product was advertized as a T model and was the regular model. But no big deal it was not as good as my old Magellan. It does not have "MOST USE OF FREEWAYS" which is very important to have so you do not have to do all the back roads. It wanted me on Route 19 all the time and I wanted the freeday to go to Tampa. This was a test run it was awful. All Magellans have this great feature which will keep you safe and also has least use of freeways. After four years I have now bought a Magellan with Voice activation again and will give the TOM TOM to a family member that does not like freeways. Trust me I know all of them all now and the Magellan is the best.
This is a good product for the price. Great features works great and very easy to use. I really like the MP3 player and it is great that it mutes the music to tell you about turns
I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a quality GPS unit.
