Describes the frustrations of the so called 'Western Mind' in understanding the deep meaning and application of the concept and experience of a Zen mind and or experience. Lists things that get in the way of the Westerner, such as self criticism, goal orientation vs. experience orientation, effort vs. non-effort, etc... Good read for understanding the Japanese way of the pursuit of stillness through the perfection of an art or skill.
it was a very intriguing read. It got better as the story went on. However i think the entire point of writing the story is lost in the fact that Herrigel begins by stating that zen can never be understood through words. Makes me wonder why he then went on to write 80 pages about the subject.......
This book was tough to start for me, but I really enjoyed it once i got into the flow of it. I found myself guessing what was going to happen next. A great book about life lessons. I really felt like I was in the authors shoes when he was practicing the art of archery. He really brings the Master to life and his lessons stayed with me.
I first read this book in 1964 along with the rest of our LRRP team. It helped us all with multiple weapons training.
I now can give a copy to my granddaughter to help her archery training. It should help her in other 'Life' areas also.
