The film takes a look at the year leading up to and first few years of Victoria on the throne of England. It shows the struggles, trials and tribulations of being a lonely child growing up under strict rule to being a young queen on the English throne, a queen that would have the longest standing reign in all of British history. The film also takes us into the life of a married monarch. A true love story for the ages, the marriage between Victoria, played by Emily Blunt, and Albert, played by Rupert Friend, was arranged prior to their eventual meeting. Their official meeting was scripted, but it was when both dropped the script and began to speak as themselves that the historic romance blossomed. The film is a wonderful depiction of the early life of the queen, showing how she became one of the greatest monarchs in British history.
Although I am not technically trained as an historian, I found this movie worth its price at the theatre. Being one of many costume dramas that I have seen The Young Victoria has been by far most sound in design, screen capture, performance, and set. One must remember, though, that this is just a movie and in order for it to be completely historically accurate is reaching for the stars. This film was an interpretation above all; an inside look at the life of a young queen from an unfamiliar angle, her personal life. My rating for this film stands at a strong four star, and it is recommended that if you are able to let go of the idea of being historically accurate and allow yourself to enter the imagination of film makers you will enjoy The Young Victoria.
I liked this movie A LOT !
Of course I am an Anglophile, but I think most women, particularly, would like this film because we can all relate to young Victoria's feelings of uncertainty in becoming a woman.
The sets are gorgeous. The costumes are wonderful. The acting is fine and moving.
This movie gives us a different look at Queen Victoria. We think of her as being a dowager --dressed in heavy black clothing, overweight, sad and perhaps bitter. But we forget that she was a young lady once, with all the passions and emotions of one.
Her genuine love of Albert is touching.
The only thing I could possibly find a little fault with is that the actress who plays Victoria (Emily Blunt) is too thin and pretty for the role.
Looking at portraits done of Victoria when she was younger, you can see she was a substantial woman, even then. Complete with a long Germanic nose with a prominent bump in the bridge of it. She wasn't ugly, but she was no "looker". And you have to figure that the commissioned portraits of the time were making her look good, appealing to her favor. In person, she was probably plain if not slightly homely, judging by her actual photographs from the latter part of her life. (All Royalty has better representations done of themselves. Take King Tut for instance. We now know through advanced forensic science that he IN NO WAY looked anything like his gold death mask, the handsome, regal, sexy young man. He was small, his skull was elongated and deformed. Small eyes, over-bite and buck teeth. His buck teeth were so protruding, he could eat an apple at arms' length. But I digress....)
Don't get me wrong. Emily Blunt does a fine job. But If I were the director, I would have had her gain 35 pounds and used make-up to downplay her natural good looks a bit.
All-in-all, I really liked this movie. I wanted more. I didn't want it to end.
And in the 'Special Features' portion, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, provides some insight and commentary of her own, which is intelligent and thoughtful and is an asset to the profile of Queen Victoria.
LONG LIVE THE QUEEN !!
I first watched Young Victoria on a British Airways flight to London when it first released in Europe...and waited nearly a year for it to be available in the States so that my wife could see it. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed the movie the second time (and on a larger screen!).
The love story between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert was portrayed wonderfully. The heart and character of both Victoria and Albert were revealed in a fresh way. Oftentimes the images of Queen Victoria that I had in my mind were of an old somber lady dressed in black, with a stoic countenance. Those archaic pictures now have new meaning, having "witnessed" on screen the love relationship between Albert and Victoria in their youth; and now understanding the intense empty feeling the Queen must have experienced when her husband died, especially with her having grown up sheltered and protected from nearly all other meaningful relationships. The movie portrayed how Victoria truly loved Albert; the loss of that love must have devasted the Queeen when her Albert died of typhoid after only 20 years of marriage. No wonder the Queen wore black for the next 40 years of her reign. After watching the movie, my wife kept saying for the rest of the evening, "It is so sad they were married so few years together."
The scenery and sets in the movie were grand and completely appropriate for the era. The actors portrayed their roles splendidly.
We also appreciated that while a love story, it was rated PG, so that our kids can get a glance into history as well as enjoy the interesting story line. Young Victoria is certainly one of our favorite movies.
The Young Victoria(DVD 2010) is a very good movie, very informative. The customs were beautiful and well done.Cudos to the costume designer. The story was told in a beautiful way. Help me see Queen Victoria in a whole new light. The movie helps you to see the love that was between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert,it was intense. Queen Victoria and her mother the Duchess did not have a good relationship, but Prince Albert helped them to get along. To be watched again and again. A great family film to watch. This is a good period drama, it wasn't boring.
This movie is absolutely fantastic! Gives everyone a view into the life of the young queen and her growing courtship & love for her future husband, Prince Albert. I think what really makes the film not only marvelous, but unique as well, is that the movie is actually how the real Queen Victoria's early life (& early life with Prince Albert) played out! A must have DVD for not only romantic movie buffs, but historical fanatics as well!
