Young Guns-the movie that resurrected good westerns from the dead.
Based on the story of Billy The Kid it is a jaunt into the American Obsession with Wild West.
Billy the Kid and his gang go out to avenge the murder of their benefactor. They become deputies of the law and hunt those who are responsible for the death of John Tunstall but they take it too far.
This is a fantastic Western to add to your modern day western collection.
All Star cast includes Emilio Estevez(Billy the Kid), Keifer Sutherland(Josiah "Doc" Scurlock, Lou Diamond Phillips(Jose Chavez y Chavez), Charlie Sheen(Richard Brewer), Patrick Wayne(Pat Garret), Jack Palance and many many more big stars.
This is a film made strictly for fun.No real history revealed here and a whole lot of artistic license utilized. The flow of the film is very choppy and has a rushed feel but the characters are all likeable enough. The acting held no suprises;Don't expect to see too much from Jack Palance.Emilio was cute and funny while Kiefer was ,well Kiefer.Charlie Sheen walked through and Lou Diamond had some of the cheesiest lines I've heard in a film since the 60's.Also Demont Mulroney and Casey Siemaszko starred apparently so someone could be killed.
You need to watch this as a basis for Young Guns 2
which is a much better film.
Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen and more star in this 1988 western.
Six men become outlaws seeking revenge for the murder of their
benefactor. Emilio and the cast are terrific in this and this dvd
has good picture and sound plus a couple neat extras. Get this
great 80's western.
Young Guns is the story of New Mecico's Lincoln County War that was waged between John Tunstall and Lawrence Murphy in 1877-78. Murphy was a very crude and ruthless owner of the Murphy-Dolan Cattle Company who had exercised a monopoly over the price of cattle being sold to the U.S. Cavalry and the Dept. of the Interior for distribution to the Indians on reservations. His underhanded business practices were rife with payoffs and bribes. The Governor of the territory was rumored to be on his payroll as well as the military commanders. When John Tunstall arrived in Lincoln County, he too went into the Cattle Business. Tunstall was an aristocrat(An Earl), a gentleman, and highly educated. He took in the unwanted young men of the frontier as employees. He cultured and educated them, using them as regulators on his property. When Tunstall threatened to upset the monopoly and attempt to sell cattle to the government, he was murdered by Murphy men. This was the beginning of the Lincoln County War.
William Bonny (Billy the Kid) was one of those boys taken in by John Tunstall. Following Tunstall's murder, he along with several others were deputized to serve warrants on several men who were wanted in connection with Tunstall's murder.
Knowing that nothing would be done to the murderers, the regulators/deputies just killed the men named in the warrants. The county sheriff and eventually the Cavalry were sent after them. In the movie, Billy the Kid shot and killed Lawrence Murphy in 1878, but in reality he died of cancer in 1878, at the age of 47. One of the men who had earlier ridden with the Kid and his group, Pat Garrett, was made Marshall and charged with the capture of Billy. Billy was supposedly killed by Pat Garrett on July 14, 1881. There is however, some evidence that this isn't true.
1878 in New Mexico: John Tunstall picks up young gun men from the road to have them work on his ranch, but also to teach them reading and to civilize them. However he's a thorn in the side of the rich rancher Murphy, as he's a competitor in selling cattle. One day he's shot by Murphy's men. Judge Wilson can't do anything, since Sheriff Brady is one of Murphy's men. But attorney Alex persuades him to constitute Tunstall's young friends to Deputies and give them warrants of arrest for the murderers. Instead of arresting them, William Bonney just shoots them down. Soon the 5 guys become famous and William gets the name "Billie the Kid" - but they're also chased by dozens of Murphy's men and the army. The people however honor him as fighter for justice.
