Movie synopsis
An affectionate parody that pays homage to the FRANKENSTEIN films (from the novel FRANKENSTEIN by Mary Shelley) directed by James Whale in the 1930s, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is both a zany comedy and a cinematic tour de force. Written by director Mel Brooks and the film's star, Gene Wilder, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN has all the usual--and in this case slightly unusual--suspects: the reluctant scientist Frederick Frankenstein, who is actually the grandson of the infamous creature-creator (pronounced "Fronken-steen" and played by Wilder), his spoiled fiancée (Madeline Kahn), Igor the pop-eyed hunchback (Marty Feldman), his dizzy assistant (Teri Garr), the castle's hideous head housekeeper (Cloris Leachman), and, of course, the Monster (Peter Boyle). Highlights include the sets, which are the original ones used in the Whale films; the beautiful black-and-white cinematography; and the fine screenplay. Combining noirish elegance with uproarious sight gags and double entendres is a feat Brooks pulls off fabulously, directing the wonderful ensemble to act with sensitivity and humanistic feelings as well as with lunatic abandon. YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is a treat from beginning to end.

Gene Wilder's Script & Acting Plus Mel Brooks Directing

After years of trying to overcome his infamous family's reputation, a 'serious' young neurosurgeon, Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder), inherits a castle from his grandfather, Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. Dr. Frederick finds an amusing hunchback, Igor (Marty Feldman), a pretty lab assistant named Inga (Teri Garr) & an the older housekeeper, Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman). Young Dr. Frankenstein has long felt that his grandfather's fixation on creating a human is lunacy. However . . . as Frederick rummages through mad old grandad's book on his infamous incarnation experiment, the young neurosurgeon begins to have second thoughts about being heir to the experiment itself.

While this (1974) Mel Brooks directed & Gene Wilder screenplay adaptation of teenager, Mary Shelly's (1817) classic (& now campy) horror story, turned by famous gay film director, James Whale into a (1931) horror flick, pays homage to such a illustrious past, this is a parody through which Brooks & Wilder have become known for this kind of slick wit. I feel it's the best of both Brooks' & Wilder's works. Their supporting cast is to drawer & purrrfect.

It was done in black & white in the 1974 version to give it that old time horror flick feel about it. In DVD form it's in color.

A Comedy Classic!

Review For: Young Frankenstein (DVD, 1998)

This is one of my favorite comedies of all time!

There is nothing I can say about the writing, directing, acting that is negative. Mel Brooks is a comedic genius, and the 1970's were his 'golden years' of film making. (Actually go back to 1968 and the original 'The Producers')

Gene Wilder stars in & co-wrote this film and 'Blazing Saddles', which were made within about a year of each other. Both are comedy classics!

The late great Peter Boyle is a superb 'Frankenstein's Monster' and is so funny! The late great Madeline Kahn is wonderful as well.

Another of my favorites of the 'Mel Brooks Stock Company' is Cloris Leachman.

She is a scene stealer in this film as well as in 'High Anxiety'!

'Young Frankenstein' is a winner.

Check it out if you are unfamiliar with the comedy of the great Mel Brooks.

It's worth the time and effort.

Young Frankenstein

This is a classic Mel Brooks movie and as funny today as it was in 1974. Similar to Monte Python and the Holy Grail and Princess Bride, it is full of classic scenes that are oft repeated by folks sitting around the campfire while sharing some adult beverages. Released in black and white and featuring Peter Boyle in on of his most memorable performances as the monster, the movie stars Gene Wilde, Teri Garr, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman and Gene Hackman in a wonderful, rare comedic role. The movie ranks as one of the funniest comedy films of all time and there is nothing to not like. If you like your comedy, this movie is a must for any serious film buff.

Young Frankenstein DVD

Review For: Young Frankenstein (DVD, 1998)

Arguably Mel Brook's funniest film along w/ Blazing Saddles. Young Frankenstein is all black & white to give a feel of the old time horror movies. Lots of big names such as Gene Wilder, Terri Garr, Madaline Kahn, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman. Made in the early-mid 70's, it's still very funny today, hasn't lost anything with time as some comedies will do, over that amount of time. Not much to say about this...the plot isn't complex, but the lines are hilarious. Igor is beyond funny, and Terri Garr steals the show with a great German accent and sex appeal.

Mel Brooks RULES!!!!!

Without question, the most hilarious Mel Brooks film ever. From start to finish, this classic comedy lampoons the horror classics with ease and absolute deftness. And while the script itself is filled with unending quips and laugh-out-loud moments, it is made perfect by the cast's delivery. Young Frankenstein is one of those films where if you asked which was your favorite character, you'd have to think about it for about thirty minutes. How do you choose between Wilder, Leachman, Boyle, Feldman, Mars, Garr, and the incomparable Kahn? You can't. They are all equally deserving of high praise. If you are need of instant comic relief, watch this film!
