Movie synopsis
Upon returning to her small Minnesota hometown to win back her high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson), now a happily-married father, divorced young adult fiction author Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) forges an unexpected bond with another former schoolmate (Patton Oswalt) who's had a particularly difficult life. Editorial reviews

"YOUNG ADULT shrouds its brilliant, brave and breathtakingly cynical heart in the superficial blandness of commercial comedy."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (12/09/2011)

"When it's done right, as it is in YOUNG ADULT, there is something absolutely mesmerizing about watching a train wreck unfold on screen. Theron and Oswalt turn out to be a terrific odd couple."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (12/09/2011)

4 stars out of 5 -- "Winningly played by Patton Oswalt, misfit Matt serves as the picture's conscience..."
Total Film - Neil Smith (04/01/2012)

4 stars out of 5 - "With a black wit and a bracingly hard-boiled heart, YOUNG ADULT is pithy and pitiless -- adult comedy through and through."
Uncut - Jonathan Romney (03/01/2012)

"YOUNG ADULT is much funnier and infinitely more savage than Cody's earlier collaboration with director Jason Reitman....Mavis's wickedness is deliriously refreshing..."
Sight and Sound - Lisa Mullen (03/01/2012)

"A one-of-a-kind comedy....YOUNG ADULT bumps along with nasty swerves, middle finger proudly in the air, toward and ending blessedly free of anything warm, fuzzy, or optimistic." -- Grade: A-
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (12/16/2011)

3.5 stars out of 5 -- "While Theron's fearless performance is admirable and gutsy, it's Patton Oswalt's turn as her former classmate Matt that is the hands-down stand-out of the entire film."
Box Office - Kate Erbland (11/10/2011)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Oswalt is the key to the film's success. Theron is flawless at playing a cringe-inducing monster....Oswalt's Matt is human, realistic, sardonic and self-deprecating."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (12/07/2011)

"With Theron doing the impossibly heavy lifting of making a woman inclined to selfishness, irresponsibility and condescension somehow worth our time and interest..."
Movieline - S.T. Vanairsdale (12/08/2011)

bookwriter gone sour

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

charlize theron plays a young adult book writer.she had a popular series of books and is writing her last book of the series.she comes home and sees a picture of her high school boyfriend new baby.i am not clear if she goes back to her home town for a reunion or just to meet up with her high school boyfriend.her high school boyfriend is now married and has a child.charlene's character wants to go back to her hometown and steal him back for herself at all costs.along the way she meets an ex classmate who had a locker next to her.the two become aquainted and become friends.charlize tries really hard to steal her ex away from his wife.she has no success at this.she goes back each time to her locker buddy and shares what has happened in her attempts to ge her ex back.to me the movie was a bit slow but entertaining movie.it is well worth spending the time to see the ending.

A Few Good Laughs

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Charlize is an aging writer who is a bit crazy and alcoholic and wants to steal her old high-school boyfriend away back home who is happily married with a new baby.
The movie is pretty good and worth a few laughs. There is a painfully awkward climax towards the end, and abit of an open ending.
Charlize was great! Good cast and characters. Ahhhh, the 90's were indeed a great time!

Excellent film about the a late thirties-ish writer of Young Adult books that can't seem to grow up! Fine acting, solid direction! Definitely worth a look...
