Product description
Product Information
The Xenogears (PlayStation, 1998) is a RPG like the hugely popular Final Fantasy series. If you want to get a slice of the philosophies of Freud, Nietzsche and Carl Jung in an action game, it could be the right pick. As Fei the protagonist, you can set out on a mission to explore your past and change the present aided by not more than three allies at a time like the Final Fantasy VII game. The Xenogears (PlayStation, 1998) game has all the elements of a political and religious thriller in which you are at constant conflict with your memory and machines. The Xenogears (PlayStation, 1998) takes the RPG concept to new heights and is a visual treat with high end graphics and well-sketched characters.

Xenogears is a Game to Have!

Review For: Xenogears (Sony PlayStation 1, 1998)

Xenogears introduces one of the most unique play style ever. The storyline had a very great theme in it. If you've never heard about this game back in 1998, but have played the other Xeno game, "Xenosaga" for the PS2 then you have to try and get this game. You may even love it more than saga.

For the storyline, if you've played saga then it's pretty much the same, it focuses on mankind and an alternate being, I think it was Uudo in saga and the one in gears was more like an alien lifeform called Deus, and their struggles with the Zohar. In both games the characters use mech's or giant robots to battle the enemy and also play a role in the main storyline due to the Anima Relics used in the mechs. Also the theme is very religious to the bible. I will not get into more details and spoil everything for the people who has not played this game.

Battle system:
There exists two battle choices-either using characters or their mechs.
character battle-the character battle in xenogears is one of the best turn based battle system in most of the turn based battle system RPG's ever. It took out the command select menu of attack for the button combination attack to perform the character's deathblows. The basic of it is that the Triangle, Square, and X buttons are the main usage for attack, there is a select combination to perform and the character has several deathblows that will please the player throughout the game. There also exist's magic elements called ether, their usage is to damage the enemy with elements of nature and can hit multiple enemies too. There exist an AP gauge that can be built up to 24 points and can be used to combine the character's normal deathblows together and damage the enemy with a fast combination of your own choosing.

Mech battles:
You can also use the character's preferred mech in combat known as Gears. The Gears battle is similar to the character style with the same button combination, but also exists a fuel gauge(like gas for a car). Gears battle their exist level 0, 1, 2, and 3 attacks. You first start off with the level 0 with only one attack with either of the buttons mentioned before, for Triangle being level 1, Square 2, and X being 3. After the first phase when it's that certain character's turn again his gear's level of attack will increase, which will allow him to combine two button for the next attack. With each time of level 0 attack then the level of the next attack increases. With a higher level of attack the stronger the gear's combination attack will be, but also uses more fuel.

This game is a very good one, but also due to the very bad english voice acting(for not expanding the dialogue of the characters so when the character's mouth moves then the voice comes out and the voice end when the mouth stops moving). Due to this it seems really weird to see the character's saying "That's right, I'm a coward! and still see the character's mouth moving. The problem of the is that the japanese language differs greatly from the english because of this it is harder to actually say what the character are saying, which this means that their english dialogue needs to be expanded.

Overall it is a very good game. If Xenosaga is enjoyable, then this one is way more.

Review For: Xenogears (Sony PlayStation 1, 1998)

Xenogears is an RPG made by Squaresoft back in 1998 for the original Sony Playstation. This game has many hours of gameplay split between 2 discs, and has an amazing story throughout the whole game.

This is one of my all time favorite RPGs from the playstation era, and it deserves it.

The combat system is very different compared to most RPGs. It is a turn based system, but instead of just having a basic attack you have inputs such as light, medium, and heavy attacks. As you go through the game you learn different inputs to create special attacks, for example light and heavy create everyones' first special attack that they learn very early. What you can also do is build up Action Points to do combos, and use multiple special attacks in one turn. This is while on foot. There is also a Gear, man-made giant machines, combat which is identical yet different. You have the same inputs, but the more powerful the attack the more fuel it consumes. You can also build up attack levels in your gear, to launch a powerful attack in one turn.

The story is based around Fei, the main character who has amnesia and has no idea how he got to the village where you begin. Suddenly soldiers piloting gears make an emergency landing in the village, which breaks out into a battle and begins Fei's long journey throughout the world in order to find out who he really is.

The only downside I have found to this game is the fact the ending seems rushed. Also there are times where its hard to navigate through the game such as jumps around cliffs, finding your way around small corridors, and generally times when you will be completely lost and have no idea where to go.

Despite this, the game is amazing and the story will last with you a life time, and maybe even have you coming back to play it again just to relive the story.

If you have played any of the Xenosaga series, or are a general fan of RPGs, I would recommend picking this game up.

If you have not tried it and love gripping narrative, play Xenogears now!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Review For: Xenogears (Sony PlayStation 1, 1998)

The characters, the environments, the twists and turns, everything this game manages to pack into it is incredibly detailed and painstakingly, while lovably, crafted. While disc 2 is nowhere near as complete as disc 1, it is a fitting end to the story, though it might leave some wanting more.

There is no reason that the age of this game should hold anyone back from playing it. The relevance of this game has not changed in the fifteen years since its release. You will feel all the emotions this game has to offer if you give it a play.

If you do end up playing the game and get sucked right in you might want to consider also getting the Perfect Works at some point. Even though the physical book is only available in Japanese, there are English translations available around the web. It is an attempt to fully chronicle the expansive universe that Square created for this game. It is as in-depth as you could dream it being: characters, technology, historical notes, power relations, and much more!

Xenogears is a game that will give you a new-found expectation of good RPGs. It set the bar really high for 1998 and I've yet to see another game best it in all the areas that matter.

A game that defies the Sacred Teachings

Review For: Xenogears (Sony PlayStation 1, 1998)

It is what you call, blaspheme and a curse if you compare the storyline of the game to the actual Book of Life, the Holy Bible. "Ye shall be as gods" is a quote for the virus that plagued the ship in the beginning. One of the plots in the game goes like this: "God made man and woman... then Adam and Eve plucked and ate the apples from the Forbidden Tree... casted down from heaven, man rebelled against God in form of machines known as 'Gears' and defeated God..." That will offend the religious factions of this time, but other than that, this RPG is one of the greatest RPGS of all time. Read more of the other game reviews about the superb gameplay, graphics, and storyline which I give a 10/10 for each criteria. An excellent game beyond measure and one of Squaresoft's Finest works of art during 1998, my favored year of video games ever. This game over-shadows Namco's revived series of "Xenosaga" and it fails compared to Xenogears.

Xenogears- another Square Enix masterpiece

Review For: Xenogears (Sony PlayStation 1, 1998)

The reason I first became interested in Xenogears was a referral from a friend. He RAVED about it. At first i thought he was nuts, but now I'M the one who's obsessed with Xenogears!
A truly well-balanced role-playing game. The story takes you to places you've never thought possible! If you like anime, then you'd LOVE Xenogears! Speckled throughout the story and text are fully animated videos, as if you're actually playing one of your favorite anime movies!
And lets not forget the fun factor. Xenogears has martial arts-based battles with possible combos that can dispose of your toughest bosses in one shot! If executed correctly, you can do your favorite combo after combo after combo for maximum damage. And then there's the Gear Battles, when you're piloting gigantic meca and beating the snot out of the bad guys!
PSOne and PS2 compatable gameplay (but you cannot load your saved games from your PSOne memory card to your PS2, and for some odd reason you can't save your game progress on the PS2 memory card. So, if you want to save AND load your game, then you have to use the PS or PSOne console...sorry)
