Movie synopsis
When choosing which mutant hero they would use to launch the X-MEN feature-film prequel series ORIGINS, the creators of the hugely successful franchise had a no-brainer of a decision in going with Wolverine. Not only is he the most well-known and popular X-Men character, but Wolverine--as brought expertly to life in true leading-man fashion by Hugh Jackman--was essentially the star of the three previous X-MEN movies. As the title implies, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE is the back story of the fiery and conflicted Wolverine (né James Logan), whose mutant powers include killer claws that shoot from his knuckles and a regenerative ability that allows him to live seemingly forever. Taking a few mild liberties but staying relatively faithful to the comic-book source material, ORIGINS follows Logan from his first recognition of his mutant powers as a young child up through his infamous adamantium rebirth and the total memory loss that would subsequently fuel his angry quest. Wolverine’s story has enough intriguing details to allow for a grown-up psychodrama in the mold of THE DARK KNIGHT, and the actors on hand--including Danny Huston as Stryker and Liev Schreiber as Logan’s half-brother, Victor (aka Sabretooth)--have the chops to deliver. Director Gavin Hood, however, opts in favor of cinematic razzle-dazzle heavy on John Woo-style action-ballet and CGI glitz. From Deadpool’s eye-popping swordplay (the action-adventure equivalent of Riverdance) to the tightrope-walk of a fight scene in the film’s finale, WOLVERINE is a blockbuster action film in the most fundamental sense of the word. While some might complain that the film lacks the storytelling substance of the first two X-MEN films, if it’s bang you’re after, then this certainly isn’t a waste of your bucks.

USA Today - Claudia Puig (05/01/2009)

"It's a solid, efficient comic book movie....Both Jackman and costar Liev Schreiber, who plays Wolverine's even angrier half-brother Sabretooth, are fine actors who throw themselves into whatever they take on..."

"Mr. Schreiber, sporting fangs as well as mutton chops, gives the movie a surly kick..."

Wolverine Is A Bit Too Mean and Bitter For Me and PG-13

Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) turns the screen to fire as he seeks personal vengeance upon those who have worked so hard to exploit his talents for self gain. Wolverine's mysterious past comes alive in this 4th Marvel Comics X-men mutant film directed this time by Gavin Hood (Rendition). As Origins goes, the film franchise had no problems picking Jackman to star in this prequel film series. Hopefully we might see more of the same coming to you local theater sooner than you think. Sporting a PG-13, in my opinion was a purely monetarily calculated MPAA mistake, since most of the film seems to be more of adult nature.

Putting things into perspective, I seem to remember decades back of studies pointing to violence in mainstream film and television that causes violent tendencies in children and adults alike. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" seems to capitalize on hostile attitudes which helps affect our overall attitudes towards the way we perceive things. I really think this kind of early exposure to out of control thinking and violent acts is truly not good for anyone, much less an gullible teen whose mind becomes extremely influenced by biases and role models.

Origins takes us down a dark road where the story takes a turn to some kind of childhood trauma which causes a young James Logan to bond with his half brother, Victor (Liev Schreiber), who later as a man becomes the power hungry and destructive, super-mutant Sabretooth.

Both James and Victor seem to have immortality and are both seen serving in the U.S. Civil War, WWI, WWII, and several other skirmishes before becoming separated by some kind of strife between them. Wolverine's mutant powers include killer claws that shoot out from his knuckles. This ability becomes even more enhanced by a laboratory procedure that almost kills him. The procedure was administered while Wolverine was submerged in solution and put into suspended stasis. He is then injected with a strong alloy compound called Adamantium which bonds with his skeletal structure permanently.

This procedure causes him to have flashbacks of his life with his girl-friend and happier days. His new life begins as a super-super mutant when he overhears them say that they are about to erase his memory. This new rebirth and betrayal will fuel his temper and cause him to seek total vengeance upon those responsible for his current problems.

Even though X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a successful blockbuster action film, many would probably agree with my opinion that the extreme cursing as well as the death of the old farmer and his wife were totally unnecessary and inappropriate to adding to the storytelling substance of the film.

Other mutants include Danny Huston as Stryker. I'm glad I didn't pay money to see this at the theater when it first came out, but it is still a good film to watch late at night when nothing else is on television.

I'll give this a 4/5 for CGI effects and then production aspects of the film.

X-Men Wolverine (blu-ray)

X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the first chapter in the X-Men saga, unites Wolverine with several other legends of the X-Men universe, in an epic revolution that pits the mutants against powerful forces determined to eliminate them.

Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar, as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, adamantium claws, and a primal fury known as berserker rage. X-Men Origins: Wolverine stays true to the tone of the X-Men motion picture franchise, continuing the films' balance between spectacle and reality, while heightening the emotions and relationships.

The film also introduces a team of mutants, including several whose appearances in the movie series have been long anticipated. Movie audiences will meet Team X, a covert military cadre comprised entirely of mutants. Its members are: Wolverine; his brother Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber), aka Sabretooth, a feral being of unimaginable power; Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), later to be known as Deadpool, a high-tech mercenary skilled at swordplay; Agent Zero (Daniel Henney), an expert tracker and lethal marksman; Wraith (Will.i.am), a teleporter; Fred J. Dukes (Kevin Durand), also known as The Blob, a morbidly obese and super-strong behemoth; and Bradley (Dominic Monaghan), who can manipulate electricity. Leading them is William Stryker (Danny Huston), a figure introduced in X2: X-Men United, but whose origins and motives are now fully explored, for it is Stryker's complex relationship with Wolverine that defines much of Logan's past... and future. Good Movie!

Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar - as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, retractable claws and a primal fury. Leading up to the events of X-Men, X-Men Origins: Wolverine tells the story of Wolverine's epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe whose appearances in the film series have long been anticipated.

Wolverine had bone claws?

I enjoyed watching this movie alot, BUT, there was some contradicting elements to the storyline. Remember in X-men two, when Striker said- "I just gave you claws". That made me think that Logan never had them before. Also, his brother didn't die at the end.......so, where was he throughout the following Trilogy? I dunno. Well anyhoo, I usually don't press the details this much. This was a very good "beginning" movie, no matter how you slice it. There is also a cool group of other mutants to enjoy, who also weren't involved in the following movies too.
