Let me begin by saying that X-Men: The Official Game is the reason movie licenses receive such a bad reputation when it comes to video games. Taking place before the second and third movie “allegedly,” this game lacks the quality of the last couple of Marvel title releases. A big downside to the game that appears immediately to the gamer as they start this train wreck of a game is the opening sequences and cut scenes. Created to appear as a “talking” comic, the game misses the mark at creating the ambiance it was attempting to achieve, yet instead comes across as a weak design to remove CGI cut scenes, save money, and release the game along with the movie (and for the money). At first, the concept was unique, until I remember they used it on the original X-Men game on Sega Genesis.
The controls for the game are really weak, and the responsiveness and accuracy is off base. Accomplishing your attack sequences can come across as a crap shoot at times. What can be frustrating is controlling Iceman. When surfing around, you cannot help to notice the lack of control you have with this character, even with the balance mutation filled completely. Along with the controls, the camera angle fails to let you discover the areas appropriately, especially when searching for the in-game extra sentinel pieces.
The two saving graces for this game are playing as Nightcrawler and this is a good game to build up your gamer score. As Nightcrawler, you can teleport around the boards, fighting foes, using this disappearing act to your advantage. It was nice to see the 360 keep up with how fast I kept the blue man going. As for the gamerscore, with some persistence, you can get an easy 1,000 points with this game.
Overall, pick this game up as a rental for a week. If you play the game on novice, you can beat the game in 2-4 days, but if you are striving for achievements, may take you a bit longer. If you are an extreme X-Men fan and a button smashing game lover, then here you go – otherwise this game is just another missed movie licensed game.
With three different characters to choose from, X-men can feel like 3 different games all rolled into one. But those games can be hit or miss. First is Wolverine. He is a very repetitive character and can tend to make the game drag on. Nightcrawler is almost the same if it were not for his special ability. Teleporting is a lot of fun and can make for great fighting too but fist to fist is boring. Ice man is the best of the three because he surfs the sky on a sheet of ice. The story is a prequel to the movie but that is no excuse for only allowing three character when we really want them all. Graphics are not a big improvement on the 360 at all but there is a slight increase in texture detail. Maybe that's just my HD though. Controls are solid except for maybe Nightcrawler's combos but practice makes perfect. No multiplayer is bad news and the single player can be completed in only a few hours. Still can be a fun game though. But even fans should Rent before you Buy. 3.5/5
This game could have been alot better. It lacks in all areas.
Graphics are mediocre. In game movies are'nt that great. They try to give it a comic book feel by using still images that occasionally move. The voice acting is terrible and lack enthusiasm.
Gameplay: The game gets difficult at times and is very repetitive right from the beginning. You'll find yourself using the same move over and over. The characters are fun to play with especially nightcrawler and iceman. They could have added some more moves to either one of them to make it more interesting. They had some great ideas going but couldnt quite get it right. This is what greed gets you.
This game is great for the die hard X-men movies fan. Graphics and story line are amazing. Nightcrawler and Iceman levels are by far the best. Wolverine's are bit far fetched from the movie. Overall, great game! Good Play!
I bought this game because I wanted to see the graphics and get a feel for the idea behind the new movie. (I love the XBOX 360!)
I love the fact that you are not confined to playing one character. You control Wolverine, Ice Man, and Nightcrawler.
The hard part is learning all three separate sets of controls for these characters. I enjoy a challenge and this game provides that in plenty.
The only thing that I do not care for is that when it goes into "movie" sequences it is comic book form and not actual clips from X3. This makes those sequences a little choppy but it does not deteriorate the gameplay experience.
