Chet and Maureen Raymo's "Written in Stone" is one of the best popular yet technically complete accounts of the often complex geology of the American Northeast. It is also fun to read. The Raymos have a gift for the right geologic metaphor that illuminates and reflects on an important aspect of the geologic history of the Northeast. In my work as a geology educator in Western Massachusetts, I often turn to “Written in Stone” to help me focus on the most important aspects of Earth history, particularly the Precambrian. I heartily recommend Chet and Maureen Raymo's "Written in Stone.”
