| Geneen Roth's 1991 bestseller, When Food Is Love , spoke to a wide audienceincluding Oprah Winfrey, who embraced Roth's empowering message. Since then, Roth has taken the sum total of her experience and combined it with spirituality, psychology, and self-awareness to explain women's true hunger in Women, Food, and God . . Roth's approach to eating is the same as any addictionit is an activity to avoid feeling emotions. From the first page, readers will be struck by Roth's intelligence, humor, and sensitivity, as she traces the path of overeating from its subtle beginning through its logical end. Whether the drug is booze or brownies, the problem is the same: opting out of life. Roth's premier advice is eat anything you want . She powerfully argues for personal investigation and urges readers to pay attention to what they truly needand it usually cannot be found in a supermarket. She provides seven basic guidelines for eating (the most important is to never diet) and shares reassuring, practical advice that has over the years helped thousands of women who have attended her highly successful seminars and workshops.. Truly a thinking woman's guide to eatingand an anti-diet book women everywhere will find insights and revelations on every page. . No matter how sophisticated or wealthy or broke or enlightened you are, how you eat tells all. If you suffer about your relationship with food -- you eat too much or too little, think about what you will eat constantly or try not to think about it at all -- you can be free. Just look down at your plate. The answers are there. Don't run. Look. Because when we welcome what we most want to avoid, we contact the part of ourselves that is fresh and alive. We touch the life we truly want and evoke divinity itself. Since adolescence, Geneen Roth has gained and lost more than a thousand pounds. She has been dangerously overweight and dangerously underweight. She has been plagued by feelings of shame and self-hatred and she has felt euphoric after losing a quick few pounds on a fad diet. Then one day, on the verge of suicide, she did something radical: She dropped the struggle, ended the war, stopped trying to fix, deprive and shame herself. She began trusting her body and questioning her beliefs. It worked. And losing weight was only the beginning. She wrote about her discoveries in When Food Is Love, her first New York Times bestseller. She gave huge numbers of women their first insights into compulsive eating and she changed huge numbers of lives for the better. Now, after more than three decades of studying, teaching and writing about what drives our compulsions with food, Geneen adds a profound new dimension to her work in Women, Food and God. She begins with her most basic concept: The way you eat is inseparable from your core beliefs about being alive. Your relationship with food is an exact mirror of your feelings about love, fear, anger, meaning, transformation and, yes, even God. But it doesn't stop there. Geneen shows how going beyond both the food and feelings takes you deeper into realms of spirit and soul to the bright center of your own life. With penetrating insight and irreverent humor, Roth traces food compulsions from subtle beginnings to unexpected ends. She teaches personal examination, showing readers how to use their relationship with food to discover the fulfillment they long for. Your relationship with food, no matter how conflicted, is the doorway to freedom, says Roth. What you most want to get rid of is itself the doorway to what you want most: the demystification of weight loss and the luminous presence that so many of us call "God." Packed with revelations on every page, this book is a knock-your-socks-off ride to a deeply fulfilling relationship with food, your body...and almost everything else. Women, Food and God is, quite simply, a guide for life. | |

Quick read and interesting ideas about women's relationship to food and to God. It helped change my attitude about food and emotional eating! I highly recommend this book. Saw the author interviewed on Oprah and ordered the book right away. Will keep it to re-read as there are many ideas that I will want to visit again.
This book shows the great relationship between Food, God and women, hopefully, it will help me lose weight.
Oprah had the author, Geneen Roth on her show and since I have weight issues I decided to get the book. It is a great read. Some colleagues and I are planning to do a book study as a group because it's rather deep and one read isn't enough. I'm doing some deep soul searching as a result and opening up to feelings that had been buried a long time ago! I would certainly recommend this book to all women, men, boys, and girls alike who have issues with any "addiction".
I found this book a little bit hard to read at first; some of the phrasing was awkward in my opinion. As I read further into it, however, the "lightbulb" came on and the author's message really began coming through to me. I had never given much thought about eating as a way to escape (feelings), or leave my body as such so not to experience whatever negative thinking was needing to be pacified. This book give you yet another reminder to come back to what we are feeling and experiencing and look at it from a healthier and safer perspective. In doing so, we discover what is really underneath the surface and begin the process of putting aside any and all neurotic behaviors.
A little bit of a slow start. . .but really eye-opening in self-discovery.
I thought this book was well worth reading if you have ever had an issue with food. Geneen Roth does an excellent job describing the reasons that we may eat when we are not hungry. She gives anecdotes from her retreats which are very helpful. Her practical suggestions and "guide to eating" is helpful as well. I definitely benefited from reading her book and have recommended it to others.
