Movie synopsis
Aaron Sorkin's brilliant drama, set in the hyperdramatic world of the White House, proves that it wasn't a one-season wonder with this outstanding second round of episodes. Once again starring Martin Sheen as President Jed Bartlet, THE WEST WING features solid supporting turns by Rob Lowe, Richard Schiff, and Allison Janney. This release contains every episode from the show's stellar second season.

Liberal Philosophy, but Great TV

The West Wing was one of those series that I just missed when it was featured on prime time TV. Having heard many positive things about it, I decided to watch it starting with Season One and continuing. Season One ends with a great cliff-hanger, so I couldn't wait to get my copy of Season Two to see the out-come.

The acting ensemble in this show is amazing. Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Dule Hill, and Allison Janney, who will always be "THE MOTHER OF JACOB AND THE MAN-IN-BLACK" to me, are all perfect in their roles. This is the kind of high comedy drama that feeds off of witty dialogue and fast-paced interaction. The scripts are powerful in their presentations of contemporary problems and the high-minded idealism which climaxes each episode is thought-provoking and intense. Some scenes are sometime almost "preachy" and a little cheesy in their attempt to model nobility.

The far-left bias of this series does bother me, however. When I purchased this set, I intended to keep the entire series as part of my DVD collection to watch again later. However, the way Christians are villainized is not only offensive but mean-spirited. Therefore, I watch to contemplate and enjoy the acting, while trying to ignore the intolerant banter. Why is it that Evangelicals are the only group that "its okay' to bash on TV? Any way, I will resale this set; however, I recommend it with reservations. I would not watch it with impressionable children or teens.

What We Are Watching Now... The West Wing!

When the Big Networks' TV Season is over, (or on hiatus like this past Season!), we usually rent DVD Sets to catch up on new series that we have found after they have been on, or sets that have compiled some of our favorite series recently.

Right now we are waiting for Season 3 of 'The West Wing' to come in, after viewing Seasons 1 & 2 this past week.

This great TV Series was one of Tina's 'TV Shows' that she watched before we married a few years ago.

I hadn't watched it before, and found myself very interested in the final seasons, starting midway in Season 4. I usually don't like getting 'involved' with a series that has been on for a while, but found the actors to be well casted and after a while tended to ignore the sometime 'preachy' aspects from the producers and just let myself be entertained by the storyline.

Recently with the 'presumptive' nominee Obama winning the Democratic nomination, I've missed watching the fun of actual campaign races being fought everyday on the cable networks.

When I saw Season One of this TV Show for rental, I queried Tina if she wouldn't mind if I rented the DVD for us to view.

Turns out she had only see most of the episodes of Season 1 & 2 herself, and thus we have been enjoying watching this 'timely' show the past couple of weeks.

Now we are watching another DVD set while waiting for Season 3 of 'West Wing' to come in.

BTW, if you have not seen all the episodes of this series, it has a high recommendation from Tina and myself!

We do watch more than just Sci-Fi and Comic Book Movies!

Please note: The above was from our blog post date 06-29-08, and is shared here as our 'review' of this DVD Season 2!

the west wing -- the complete second season

a two word review:
aaron sorkin.
the man can flat write -- smart, funny, compassionate, and even (how very strange for the current television milieu) moving.
combine great writing with excellent acting, and you have the can't miss formula. the ensemble cast are uniformly up to the writing, and that says a lot.
as a bonus, you get an episode called "the midterms" (disc one, episode three) which might very well be the single best episode of the entire series, and one which holds it own against the best television writing ever. and yes, i do include such classics as rod serling.
if you like ideas -- even if you can't stand politics -- this is for you: strong opinions, informed by facts, beautifully stated. even when you disagree, you can't help but admire the statement, and then it forces you really think about why you disagree, and make your own arguments more elegant in response.
buy it.
you'll like it.
and it will get your thru long winter evenings when there's absolutely nothing on all 350 channels.

The West Wing, season 2

Like many people, I am addicted to The West wing. Like every one of the addicted, I was very upset when the decision to cancel the series was announced. So now the only relief we have from the current network lineup is to put in a dvd of the finest drama series ever produced. Anyone considering the purchase of season 2 must already be a fellow addict. If you have enjoyed the first season, I can guarantee that you will love season 2 even more. It is constructed like The godfather 2, in that it combines the story lines that occurred both before and after Season 1. My favorite characters are all still present, and of course some interesting new ones have been added. I feel compelled to add that there are no "bad" seasons of West Wing, but this may be thebest of them all.
