Movie synopsis
Directed by Steven Spielberg, “War Horse” is an epic drama nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. “War Horse” follows the story of a young English boy, Albert (Jeremy Irvine), and his much-loved horse, Joey, who is sold in 1914 to pay Albert’s father’s debt. This drama then follows Joey’s journey alongside another horse, Topthorn, as they prepare for World War I with new owner Captain Nicholls (Tom Hiddleston). This DVD takes viewers on an emotional ride as Joey and Topthorn enter battle and spend years pulling heavy artillery after being captured by German soldiers. The horses meet with good friends, foes, and tough conditions throughout their journey. In 1918, Albert enlists in the army and viewers can only hope that somehow the friends will be brought together again. “War Horse” is an adaptation of the 1982 novel by Michael Morpurgo.

Editorial reviews

"[A]n atmospheric, tear-jerking, highly cinematic melodrama....This is a film that kids, middle-aged adults and grandparents can all see -- together or separately -- and get something out of in their own ways."
Hollywood Reporter - Todd McCarthy (12/15/2011)

3 stars out of 4 -- "Spielberg has created an appropriate showcase for the magnificent creature that emerges, one that recalls the great movie horses of yore in a story guaranteed to pluck, grab and wring viewers' hearts..."
Washington Post (12/23/2011)

"Steven Spielberg's WAR HORSE is masterly, accomplished, stirring....Engaging..."
Movieline - Stephanie Zacharek (12/23/2011)

"WAR HORSE has an exhilarating, impressionistic beauty....In the hands of a master director like Steven Spielberg, the story is impeccably crafted and heartfelt..."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (12/23/2011)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "WAR HORSE is bold, not afraid of sentiment and lets out all the stops in magnificently staged action sequences."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (12/21/2011)

"WAR HORSE has the sweep of a classic John Ford movie, the sentiment of Frank Capra and a spirited steed named Joey who will steal your heart."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (12/23/2011)

"This is a beautifully built, classically framed movie, shot with the unshowy natural expressiveness of a John Ford Western by Spielberg's great cinematographer, Janusz Kaminski." -- Grade: A-
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (01/06/2012)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] film of 1,000 spectacular magic-hour shots....Whether showing the horrors of war or the humanity of those caught up in the conflict, it hits home."
Total Film - James Mottram (02/01/2012)

"With widescreen, pastoral vistas dappled in golden sunlight and washed in music that is somehow both grand and folksy, Mr. Spielberg lays siege to your cynicism, bombarding you with strong and simple appeals to feeling."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (12/25/2011)

"To create his disarmingly earnest film, Spielberg draws from the past. Its tone is humanistic and its technique classic." -- Grade: A
A.V. Club - Keith Phipps (12/22/2011)

"Steven Spielberg has fashioned an impressive entertainment, and an occasionally stirring one, from source material with a singular pedigree—Michael Morpurgo's short novel..."
Wall Street Journal (12/30/2011)

"[We're] aware of being the presence of one of cinema's great shot-makers. Spielberg covers an ill-fated massed British cavalry charge with a sidelong tracking shot straight out of Olivier's HENRY V..."

Excellent movie, go see or buy it....

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I missed this one in the theater but after reading several reviews about it, decided to add it to my collection. In short, I loved this movie. Watched it 3 times already and still enjoy it immensly. I confess to being sentimental for horse movies, such as Secretariat, but this one is an equal to or even better than that one in some ways.

Delivery was on time, packaging was fine, and the price was the best at the time. Added it to my favorite movie list of DVD's that almost number 500 right now, and I only buy movies that hit that special note of my movie interests. I never understand why the Oscar Academy seems always to pick movie's I rarely care for to give the Oscar to, but they missed big time on this one, in my view.

I'm sure there are many reviews that give the story line, so I won't repeat that here, but it is beautifully scenic, well acted, the horses are magnificently portrayed, and it has my kind of ending. I certainly am no movie critic, but I know what I like. War Horse is excellent!

One of the best movies of 2011, great film about friendship against all odd

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Possibly one of the best movies of 2011, though, in my opinion, not acknowledged as such. Perhaps the animal-centered plot has given the impression that is it more of a "kids" movie, but I assure you that all ages will find it a rewarding adventure boosting action adventure, character appeal, and perhaps even a deeper moral lesson on the ability of innocence and humanity to conquer even the battle-lines of war.

Beautifully filmed with many tender, and well-thought out frames, this movie is enjoyable from start to finish. Sadly, movies like this seem to be a rarity in the more pop-culture and special-effects, drama-sex-unnecessary violence ridden films that grace the screens today.

I ordered this product because I was just amazed with the film, and I wanted to be able to experience the story again and again in my own home. Great quality product, no scratches or skips.

great movie to watch

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

based on the children's novel by michael morpurgo, the film tells of a thoroughbred cold raised by an english teen named albert (jeremy irvine). albert names the horse joey and spends most of his waking moments with the powerful and beautiful animal. alas, the two and separated when albert's father sells joey to an english military officer as world war one is getting underway. the film then tracks joey as he stumbles through an incredible series of events that put him right in the heart of the conflict. through all of this, albert retains hope that he will be reunited with his beloved animal. spielberg's outstanding direction means war horse will likely be remembered as one of the great animal films of all time. when watching, one can't help but think of movies like ,"old yeller", "babe" and "seabiscuit", and that's a keen compliment. this is a great movie to pickup and watch.

It was okay. A bit long winded. Not Spielberg's best work but entertaining

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

It was okay. It doesn't pack the same punch that most horse movies do. They could have chopped about 30 minutes out of this film, and I don't think it would have hurt the story one bit.

It reminded me of the French film "A Very Long Engagement" replacing the lovers with a boy and his horse. A few teary moments for me, over all entertaining, but not stellar.

Also it didn't have a film quality to it... like it was shot on digital. Does anyone know?

Dialect cross over. Everyone in the film whether they were British, French or German, all have the same British accent. It was confusing. Anyway.

Sure it's not perfect film making, but it's entertainment none the less.

Blessings, Max Rainet.

Review For: War Horse (DVD, 2012)

Not the movie you might think it is from the name. It WILL bring you in to the story more and more until you ejoy it very much. A big plus is adults and kids can both enjoy it and watch it toether. Nothing about it is cheaply done and there are no big ''stars'' because it doesn't need any. Probably would watch it a again after a short period of time.
