Movie synopsis
Directed by Steven Spielberg, “War Horse” is an epic drama nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. “War Horse” follows the story of a young English boy, Albert (Jeremy Irvine), and his much-loved horse, Joey, who is sold in 1914 to pay Albert’s father’s debt. This drama then follows Joey’s journey alongside another horse, Topthorn, as they prepare for World War I with new owner Captain Nicholls (Tom Hiddleston). This DVD takes viewers on an emotional ride as Joey and Topthorn enter battle and spend years pulling heavy artillery after being captured by German soldiers. The horses meet with good friends, foes, and tough conditions throughout their journey. In 1918, Albert enlists in the army and viewers can only hope that somehow the friends will be brought together again. “War Horse” is an adaptation of the 1982 novel by Michael Morpurgo.

Editorial reviews

"[A]n atmospheric, tear-jerking, highly cinematic melodrama....This is a film that kids, middle-aged adults and grandparents can all see -- together or separately -- and get something out of in their own ways."
Hollywood Reporter - Todd McCarthy (12/15/2011)

3 stars out of 4 -- "Spielberg has created an appropriate showcase for the magnificent creature that emerges, one that recalls the great movie horses of yore in a story guaranteed to pluck, grab and wring viewers' hearts..."
Washington Post (12/23/2011)

"Steven Spielberg's WAR HORSE is masterly, accomplished, stirring....Engaging..."
Movieline - Stephanie Zacharek (12/23/2011)

"WAR HORSE has an exhilarating, impressionistic beauty....In the hands of a master director like Steven Spielberg, the story is impeccably crafted and heartfelt..."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (12/23/2011)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "WAR HORSE is bold, not afraid of sentiment and lets out all the stops in magnificently staged action sequences."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (12/21/2011)

"WAR HORSE has the sweep of a classic John Ford movie, the sentiment of Frank Capra and a spirited steed named Joey who will steal your heart."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (12/23/2011)

"This is a beautifully built, classically framed movie, shot with the unshowy natural expressiveness of a John Ford Western by Spielberg's great cinematographer, Janusz Kaminski." -- Grade: A-
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (01/06/2012)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] film of 1,000 spectacular magic-hour shots....Whether showing the horrors of war or the humanity of those caught up in the conflict, it hits home."
Total Film - James Mottram (02/01/2012)

"With widescreen, pastoral vistas dappled in golden sunlight and washed in music that is somehow both grand and folksy, Mr. Spielberg lays siege to your cynicism, bombarding you with strong and simple appeals to feeling."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (12/25/2011)

"To create his disarmingly earnest film, Spielberg draws from the past. Its tone is humanistic and its technique classic." -- Grade: A
A.V. Club - Keith Phipps (12/22/2011)

"Steven Spielberg has fashioned an impressive entertainment, and an occasionally stirring one, from source material with a singular pedigree—Michael Morpurgo's short novel..."
Wall Street Journal (12/30/2011)

"[We're] aware of being the presence of one of cinema's great shot-makers. Spielberg covers an ill-fated massed British cavalry charge with a sidelong tracking shot straight out of Olivier's HENRY V..."
Sight and Sound - Trevor Johnston (02/01/2012)
