Movie synopsis
Throughout the 1970s and '80s, professional wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Piper (aka Hot Rod) reigned as one of the WWF's biggest and baddest superstars. Distinguishing himself with his Scottish persona (which included wearing a kilt and playing bagpipe music), Hot Rod changed the face of wrestling with his infamous Piper's Pit interview segments and a legendary feud with Hulk Hogan that led to the first-ever Wrestlemania event. The biographical documentary BORN TO CONTROVERSY revisits Piper's remarkable legacy with a collection of interviews, Piper's Pit segments, and clips from his most memorable matches, including appearances by Hogan, Ric Flair, "Cowboy" Bob Orton, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, and Bret "Hit Man" Hart.

In 2005, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame and nearly two years later, WWE Home Video honors Hot Rod with his first Superstar Personality Profile DVD. On November 14, the first DVD under the Genius Products distribution deal will be released and that DVD is entitled, WWE Born To Controversy: The Roddy Piper Story.

This is a special three-disc DVD set. The feature program is two hours long and the extras included in this release is going to make Piper fans very happy. On disc 3, only episodes of Piper's Pit are included. Who does The Rowdy One interview? We'll get to that later. But right now let's discuss the feature program.

The program on Piper is one of the best ones that was released in
2006. Two indepth interviews were conducted with Piper. One was conducted at the WWE TV Studios and the other was at Piper's residence in Portland. The Hall of Famer discusses his time living on the streets, his start in Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, what caused him not being able to rejoin WWE for ten years and much more.

In addition to hearing from Piper and his family, other individuals who were interviewed were: "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, "Mean" Gene Okerlund and Bruce Prichard. I was shocked that neither Vince McMahon or Eric Bischoff spoke on the DVD.

The footage alone that is contained in the feature program is worth your money. While the program progresses, you see footage from Portland Wrestling, Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, World Wrestling Federation, World Championship Wrestling, and World Wrestling Entertainment. The DVD doesn't stay away from the controversial moments either. Included in the feature program is a segment discussing (and showing highlights of) Piper's controversial interview with HBO Sports that was conducted in 2003.

Other topics discussed in the feature program are: Piper's Pit, Mr. T, the Dog Collar Match against Greg Valentine for the NWA United States Championship, "Cowboy" Bob Orton, Piper's feud with Hulk Hogan in both WCW and the World Wrestling Federation, his numerous returns to the World Wrestling Federation, Piper as the Intercontinental Champion and a color commentator, Piper's family, Piper as an actor, his loyalty to Don Owen and Portland Wrestling and much more!

Piper comes off as a very honest person. Amazingly, he seems very down-to-Earth dispite his fame and notoriety. After watching the feature program, you get a feeling that not only does he love his family but he would do anything for them. Piper appears to be a very stand-up individual and while he has regrets in his life, he doesn't shy away from explaining them.

I received WWE Born To Controversy: The Roddy Piper Story this past Tuesday and I've already watched it twice. It is the type of DVD that you will want to watch over and over and you'll never get tired of it. From matches to promos to Piper's Pit, there is plenty to watch and keep yourself occupied. WWE Born To Controversy: The Roddy Piper Story is a must have for any old school wrestling fan or a Roddy Piper fan.

Don't throw rocks at a guy that's got a Machine Gun!!!

This DVD set is GREAT. It's the life story, and best matches of one of Sports Entertainment's most popular,
controversial, and influencial stars, Rowdy Roddy Piper. This DVD set starts with Roddy talking about growing
up in a Youth Hostel, how he was introduced to Pro Wrestling, getting beat in record time by Larry Hennig, going
from territory to territory, his time in Portland, meeting Ric Flair, going to Mid-Atlantic and the NWA, Starrcade '83
and Wrestling's first ever Dog Collar match with Piper and Greg Valentine, leaving the NWA for the WWF, the debut
of Piper's Pit, his friendship and almost brotherhood with Bob Orton, his rebellious nature, his real life feud with Mr. T,
leaving wrestling to be an actor, coming back to the WWF, his time doing commentary, his time as Intercontinental
Champion, getting pinned for the first time EVER by Bret Hart, why Bret shouldn't have won the match, his relationship
with his Family, taking more time away from wrestling, coming back to the WWF again, leaving for WCW and everything
up to his induction in to the WWE Hall of Fame. It covers all of Piper's best feuds including Greg Valentine, Hulk Hogan,
Bret Hart, Goldust, Adrian Adonis, Vince McMahon, Mr. T and more. It also covers the unique friendship with Ric Flair,
how he really feels about never being WWE Champion, his feelings on WCW, WWE, Vince McMahon, Hogan, Mr. T,
and Bret Hart & The Hart Family. The DVD also features lots of deleted scenes including hitting Rikishi with a coconut,
The Guerrero Brothers and Mexico, ribs from Freddie Blassie and Andre the Giant and so much more. This also covers
some of wrestling's most controversial angles: Piper's feud with Bad News Allen, in which Roddy began painting himself
black, Piper's feud with Hulk Hogan, in which he kicked Cindy Lauper and more. This is a MUST see DVD set. Extras
include 24 episodes of Piper's Pit, extra stories, and 17 matches that are...

Piper & Popovich vs. Rose & Oliver
Piper vs. Buddy Rose
Piper vs. Jack Brisco
Piper vs. Valentine (Dog Collar Match)
Piper & Orndorff vs. Hogan & Mr. T
Piper vs. Orndorff
Piper vs. Mr. T (Boxing Match)
Piper vs. Iron Sheik
Piper vs. Bob Orton
Piper vs. Adrian Adonis (Hair vs. Hair)
Piper vs. Hogan (War to Settle the Score)
Piper vs. Rick Rude
Piper vs. Bad News Brown
Piper vs. Bret Hart (I.C. Championship)
Piper vs. Mountie
Piper vs. Goldust (Back Lot Brawl)
Piper vs. Hollywood Hogan

Roddy Wasn't Rowdy After 1987

If you're a fan of pro-wrestling from the 70's and 80's and were a WWF mark during the "Rock 'N Wrestling Connection" era you know that Roddy Piper was no longer "Rowdy" after his match at Wrestlemania III in 1987. This set has some great old footage of early Piper matches and Piper's Pits from his "Hey Day", but with the exception of a couple matches, everything after 1987 is just irritating. Piper was trying too hard after that and his "Fan Favorite" personna in the late 80s and early 90s was just horrible.

When I hear people say that many of the older stars of that era like Flair and Hogan should hang up their boots I don't agree with them. Though Hogan's mobility isn't what it used to be he's still got that "It" factor that made him a star and while Flair seems to have a hard time adapting to the new "WWE era" at times, he's still a master on the mic and can make an average storyline much more interesting. Piper on the other hand simply doesn't have "it" any longer. I found myself skipping past all of the late 90's and '00s era appearances, because quite honestly, they weren't entertaining and Piper simply wasn't believable any more. I know he had been in a terrible accident and wasn't in the best condition of his life, but to put him in the ring in the shape he was in was ridiculous.

I wish this set had spent more time focusing on Piper's formative years as well as some of his earlier matches in the WWF against people like Andre the Giant and Jimmy Snuka just to name a couple.

The Piper's Pit segments were a lot of fun to watch again, but to include that debacle with Brother Love and Morton Downey Jr. from Wrestlemania 5 was a waste of disc space. Also, to put all of the unfunny, uninteresting and simply boring crap Piper did in 2003 to 2006 was, again, a huge waste of disc space considering they completely skipped all of Piper's matches before "The War To Settle the Score" in February 1985.

One other issue I had with the set that I bought was that I purchased the "exclusive" 4 DVD set with "Additional Piper's Pit segments" only to put that DVD in to find a mere SIX (yes, 6) additional segments totalling a whopping 11.5 minutes! Again, a totally unacceptable use of a "bonus DVD" package. It's not even worth putting the disc in your DVD player.

It was great to see the little bit of footage from Portland and Mid-Atlantic, even though it was only three matches and those early Pits were classics. His cage match with the late Rick Rude was definitely one of Piper's later classics as was his IC title match with Bret Hart at Wrestlemania 8. However, his Wrestlemania matches with Goldust and Bad News Brown were not reflective of what made Piper "Rowdy" and his "character" was no longer "Rowdy" by the time he made his way over to pick up his paycheck in WCW.

Personally, I think this set should have focused on the time when Piper was "The Rowdy One" and was making his mark on wrestling and not when he was attempting to make his last run. I think this set gives you a small taste of what made Piper great and then leaves you wondering, "What the hell happened to him??"

"The Rowdy One"

A great DVD about one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. In my opinion the greatest "heel" of all time bar none. I have had the privilege of seeing Roddy wrestle twice at two house shows in my area. This 3 disc DVD set traces the life and career of "Hot Rod" Rowdy Roddy Piper and it does so very nicely. The DVD shows his rarely seen baby and childhood photos, his family and home are featured in this as well. A wonderful keepsake for any wrestling fan. My only complaint with this DVD set is that it doesn't include many of his earlier "Piper's Pits", to me those were the best and what I was hoping for. This DVD set includes the famous "Piper's Pit" where Roddy beams Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka in the head with a coconut. It also includes the "Pit" where Roddy and his then bodyguard "Ace" Cowboy Bob Orton (Randy Orton's Dad) grabbing the "Haiti Kid" and cutting his hair to give him a "Mr. T" look (Roddy discusses why he despised "Mr. T".). Great stuff. A lot of his career has been left out of this, his movie and TV appearances, some of his Saturday Night's Main Event matches, his appearances on "Tuesday Night Titans" (hosted by Vince McMahon) as well as co-hosting "WWF Prime Time" with the late great Gorilla Monsoon. Overall I'm glad to have purchased this set. "Hot Rod: Stay strong.

Born to Controversy: The Roddy Piper Story

Not much to say... if you like 'old school' wrestling, and the 'Hot Rod'...
this is a DVD set for you.

3 DVD's of everything Roddy Piper... a 'bio' on the one disc, classic matches on disc 2...
and many of his "Piper's Pit" segments on disc 3.

Overall, a great DVD set.
