This is an old-fashioned war film, lacking the graphic realism of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN or SCHINDLER'S LIST. In other words, no mangled body parts, no nudity, & no blood. When someone gets shot, they fall to the ground and die immediately without screaming or bleeding. Young people may find this too tame; furthermore, except for the ending, VON RYAN'S EXPRESS makes war look like a thrilling adventure. Frank Sinatra is perfectly cast as the American colonel who matches wits with an Italian POW camp director and the Nazis. This film is all fun and games until someone gets hurt. If you liked THE GREAT ESCAPE, you'll like VON RYAN'S EXPRESS. As an example of film-making in the days when a compelling story relied on acting ability rather than realistic gore, this one is excellent.
A First class action movie with spectacular scenery. The movies premise is a little far fetched, but, hey it's fiction! Frank Sinatra shines as an American Colonel shot down in Italy who finds himself ranking officer in a POW camp full of British servicemen. Trevor Howard plays Major Fincham, senior British officer and 'Von' Ryans main antagonist. All in all a good movie that keeps chugging along at a fairly fast pace. A definite 'must have' for the war movie collector.
Von Ryan's Express is a fast-paced, well-acted World War II drama, featuring a squadron of Allied soldiers trying to escape a prison camp in Italy. While most of the prisoners at the camp are British, a determined, resourceful American Air Force colonel (Frank Sinatra) takes charge and leads the escape, which requires that the prisoners wrest control of a German train and propel it through Italy to Switzerland. The subsequent ride, featuring good special effects and outstanding stunt work, is great fun and very suspenseful. Frank Sinatra makes an effective action hero aided by veteran actor Trevor Howard as a British officer.
A really great action-adventure flick. They don't make them like this anymore! Minimal special effects, just old-fashioned drama, action, and much better acting than in today's movies.
An excellent film. One of Sinatra's best. Fabulous scenery. First rate plot.
A must for the serious WW II movie buff.
