I've long been wanting an HDTV, and found the VIZIO E Series 37" a great value!
Not only am i satisfied, I'm actually blown away at it's 100,000:1 contrast ratio, and how bright and clear everything is.
I had checked out many other brands and models at the shops around my area, and had always likened the Vizio brand to much higher-priced brands because of the picture quality. Now that this one's here with me, I also can vouch for the sound. Of course it's not like real surround sound from a full system, but playing Hi-Def games and watching HD shows and movies are much more enjoyable, both visually and audibly. SRS technology is a very positive thing!
The many kinds of inputs, including USB for Media hookup, is like icing on the icing on the cake. I'm sure some people may feel they need more than two HDMI inputs, but when you've got the option to use A/V for compatibility with component or composite, a serial port so this can be used as a computer monitor very easily, and TV/DTV input through the RF connection, What more will you need besides 2 HDMI?
In conclusion, this HDTV probably the greatest bang for a very thrifty buck!
I bought this on Ebay as a refurbished unit, but it looked brand new out of the box. Setup is easy. I have an outdoor antenna and it quickly detected and set up all the channels.
The sound is very flat when I connected it to my stereo system (I turned off all that "trusound" stuff). It sounds good, however, when connected by optic cable to a surround system with a subwoofer.
I was a little disappointed to find that the picture in picture feature doesn't allow me to view two channels at once. One of the video feeds has to be from a different input for the picture in picture to work.
The picture with a good HD signal is stunning, but it isn't bad even on weak, snowy analog stations, which is good because I've got some of those.
The TV can read images on some, but not all flash drives, JPEGs only, and it cannot zoom the images. The size of the images is fixed, looks like on a per-pixel basis, like one-to-one I would guess.
The remote layout is a bit awkward and not very user friendly. There is no zoom button, aspect ratio button or closed caption button and the mute button is tiny and squeezed in right next to another button. In order to turn closed captions on and off, or change the picture aspect ratio, or zoom the picture, you have to navigate through the on-screen menu. The input button is easy to work, but the input menu disappears too quickly, so you have to be very quick to change the input, or you have to start over.
Closed captions also don't seem to work when playing a signal from a DVD or bluray player through the TVs HDMI or Component inputs. This may be true of other TVs as well, but I don't know since this is the first TV I've ever had with these particular inputs.
I like being able to play videos from my computer through the VGA and audio inputs.
My home theater setup includes a high-def projector. It would be nice if this TV had an HDMI out or HDMI pass-through feature so I could use one bluray player to feed both the TV and the projector at the same time without having to buy an HDMI switch or spolitter, or having to plug and unplug the HDMI cables in order to use both. There is also no svideo input on this TV, even though it still has RF and composite inputs, along with just about every other kind of input there is.
This set also has lip sync, which is good as far as it goes, but sometimes the range of adjustment isn't enough to get the job done. It also has to be set manually, while the lip synch on my Sony AV receiver seems to do a better job and it works automatically. The two lip synch mechanisms can also be made to work together.
I also like the fact that the TV turns on automatically when I turn on my bluray player which is connected to it.
I also like the Consumer Electronic Control feature which allows me to control other devices connected to the TV by HDMI cable. This came in handy recently when another dealer sent me the wrong remote for a bluray player. I was able to use the Vizio remote to run the bluray player until I got the wrong bluray remote replaced with the correct remote, and I did not have to program the remote. The TV just detected the bluray player and programmed itself automatically. Cool.
The picture is viewable from a wide angle and there is very little problem with glare off the screen surface from other light sources, a big problem with my old glass screen CRT set.
This is a very good low-cost big-screen TV with a lot of nice features that usually cost a lot more money.
Great picture quality for the price. Great entry level HDTV. Since it is so thin, the speakers are not really the best but definitely better than most CRT tvs from the past. you just can't fit good speakers in a thin tv. Many settings to get the picture the way you want it. Unfortunately the TRU Volume function does the opposite of what it was intended to do. Just turn it off and you'll be fine. The stand is cheap and wobbly and would be better off mounted on a wall for support. The high gloss plastic bezel is cheap and sensitive to marks unless you are cleaning it with silk smooth cloth. All in all, it feels like a cheap HDTV, but for the price of below $400.00 you cant beat this tv. Whether it be for gaming, movies etc. It is great if the signal is 1080p. Watch anything 720p or below and you'll hate it. Not the TV's fault, just crappy programming that is below HD par. Plug it up with an external sound system, mount it on a wall, and youll be happy for not a lot of money!
The Vizio E420VL LCD television is one of the best 42" televisions on the market and yet one of the least expensive. I have two other Vizio televisions and I am very pleased about the company's workmanship. This particular televsion, being the largest screen I own, is my pride and joy. The picture and sound quality is amazing and there are plenty of adjustment options to adjust the picture and sound to your particular liking. The television has plenty of connections that will allow you to have at the same time a multitude of audio and visual equipment hooked up to the television. The bottom line is that I believe I got more for my money than I would have gotten if I had purchased any other brand or type of 42" inch television.
This is my first flat screen and I'm very happy with it. The picture is crystal clear with bright color contrast. The look is sleek. It has a sleep timer that was important to me. Added features such as skip channel control and option of picture size is a great bonus. I would definetly buy another..
