I purchased this flash for close-up photography situations. The ring flash provides an even, shadow-free light source for photographing small objects at close range. It offers a significant advantage over the typical on-camera flash, whether integrated or hot-shoe mounted.
This is a great auxillary light for closeup/macro work. Price is a fraction of what the big two charge for similar functionality. I keep it mounted on the Canon F2.8 60mm Macro, and it does a stellar job, especially on small product shots.
