If you appreciate period films and well done productions of classic literature, this mini-series version of William Makepeace Thackeray's "Vanity Fair" is fantastic. The English cast with a few familiar faces all do a loyal credit to the satire of the novel with comedy and wit set against a rich background of lively costume and impressive interiors.
The direction has successfully established the environment of Victorian age. The charachters are well depicted by talented actors. However, the movie fails to capture the reasons for disliking the behaviour of Becky Sharp, which some might say, was the basic contention of the writer.
The story may not be of interest to those who have either not read Vanity Fair or do not find classic English Literature interesting.
Was not sure which Vanity Fair to buy, this turned out to be the best one, you can't beat A&E and BBC for the best scenery, period clothing and acting.
This was an excellent purchase! This set offers hours and hours of wonderful story line, however I wouldn't recommend it for the whole family. There are a few curse words and a couple of adult scenes (no nudity) that I found inappropriate for my 8 yr old. I'd say you'd be safe to stick with a PG 13 rating.
If you like BBC movies, you will love Vanity Fair. It is filled with drama and just the right amount of cleverness and humor.
