I am what you could call a relatively new movie fan. I have always liked movies, but I didn´t use to watch too many of them. Things have changed, but due to that previous attitude, I still have a lot of old movies to “discover”. That is the reason why from time to time I find some jewels that were released a long time ago, but that are totally new to me. “The untouchables” (1987) is, of course, one of such movies.
This film is set in Chicago, during the prohibition, a time were mobsters had enormously increased their influence due to the contraband of alcohol. The most important of all mobsters was Al Capone (wonderfully played by Robert De Niro), whose influence was pervasive and somehow accepted by most as a fact of reality. Capone controlled Chicago with force and bribes, and a philosophy that the scriptwriter of this movie (David Mamet) summed up in a phrase that the actor that plays Capone said: “Somebody messes with me, I'm gonna mess with him”.
Things change when a newcomer to the city, Federal agent Elliot Ness, forms a small group to fight crime and target Capone´s shady dealings. The group formed by Ness, an old Chicago cop (Sean Connery), a rookie police officer (Andy Garcia) and an accountant (Charles Martin Smith), replays in a highly entertaining way Brian de Palma´s cinematographic version of “The untouchables”.
I should point out that you shouldn´t expect a movie that tells you the historical truth about that period in America´s history. If that is your purpose, you are likely to be sorely disappointed. However, if you want to watch a great film, with wonderful performances and marked by a dynamic pace, rent this movie :)
PLOT: ELIOT NESS SETS UP HIS "NON corruptable" group to break up the BOOZE rackets in Chicago during Prohibition~ excellent~
A MUST SEE~ this modern Classic Gem has Kevin Costner as the ambicious Eliot Ness (based on a real life person) who took on the corrupt Gangs in Chicago during Prohibition~ he focuses on hiring POLICE who will not sell out no matter what thus the name the UNTOUCHABLES~ Sean Connery gives one of his all time BEST as the HARD vereran policeman who know how to out fox the MOB~ Brian DePalma directed this and the musical score makes the movie~ this is a fast movie with lots of action and plot and shoot outs but the basic GOOD vs Evil makes it a fun fast watch~ GREAT costumes~ I GIVE IT A FULL 10 OUT OF 10 FOR FAST PACED THRILLER ONE OF THE BEST SCORES AROUND~

One word: excellent. I'm a mob movie lover, and this is my all time #1. Kevin Costner is sensational as Eliot Ness. Sean Connery gives his best performance ever (he won an Oscar) as James Malone, the poor Irish beat cop who teaches Ness to beat the mob. Andy Garcia stars as George Stone, a sharpshooter rookie, in a milestone of his career. Charles Martin Smith is the unsuspecting role-Oscar Wallace-an accountant. I won't say any more than this-for you have yo see ths masterpiece yourself-great plot-great acting-great everything. 10 out of 10. Perfect!
Great Chicago movie classic. Robert De Niro plays Al Capone better than anyone else in history and Kevin Costner is the ultimate good cop. Sean Connery depicts the best old school Irish cop. Andy Garcia is one on the greatest support roles in the movie. The corrupt Chicago police and politics with a few good guys scattered here and there. Power, Money and Politics makes for a great story!
This is one for your film library to be watched time and time again. Sean Connery pulls you in and you fall in love with his strength and determination in his morals and ethics. Kevin Costner shows his family side as Elliott Ness and this bonding side with the few men he trusts to find justice. Robert De Nero portrays the violent, disturbed mobster who knows no bounds.I loved the realistic time warp. Felt like I was back in that era. Beautifully done movie.
