|"Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. ''Be very still,'' he whispered, as if I wasn''t already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat. " As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because--he''s a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship.Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. She begins with a familiar YA premise (the new kid in school), and lulls us into thinking this will be just another realistic young adult novel. Bella has come to the small town of Forks on the gloomy Olympic Peninsula to be with her father. At school, she wonders about a group of five remarkably beautiful teens, who sit together in the cafeteria but never eat. As she grows to know, and then love, Edward, she learns their secret. They are all rescued vampires, part of a family headed by saintly Carlisle, who has inspired them to renounce human prey. For Edward''s sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer''s writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction. (Ages 12 and up)|
Isabella Swan's move to Forks, a perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. When she meets the mysterious, alluring Edward Cullen--a vampire--her life takes a thrilling and terrifying romantic turn.
Isabella Swan's move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife-between desire and danger.Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

Stephenie Meyer is one of the many people who happen to have written a book; c'mon, who hasn't? Meyer, however, stands out in her own litle world very much like J.K. Rowling with her Harry Potter series, and as you read on in this, you'll see why. (If you see 'SPOILER' written anywhere, don't read if you don't want to hear parts of the book that haven't already been mentioned in reviews online.)
The book Twilight, the story jumps right into the tale of Bella Swan, formally known as Isabella Swan, a girl who has divorced parents, and is off from her sunny Jacksonville home in Florida to live with her father in Forks, Washington, where as she puts it, 'the rain never stops'. The dreary agreement to move in with her father was due to the fact that Bella did not want to strain her mother's new marriage to her new husband, who was trying to kick off his basketball career.
Bella, like any person moving to another place and attending a new school, starts off like and normal real person would; she meets people, drives to school, and like every girl, catches the sight of the cutest boy in school, Edward Cullen. Everyone tells Bella the same tale; they know little to nothing about dear Edward, except that he never comes to school on sunny days. Oh- that, and he's deathly beautiful.
Bella, determined to figure out what exactly Edward is, litterally places her neck on the line and avoids death one too many times in Forks, where she is known mostly as a 'danger magnet'. Her father, the police chief, keeps an eye on his high school daughter quite frequently. Eventually it gets to a point where you'll catch on that these two are the today fantasy version of Romeo and Juliet...without the deadly ending. For now.
As Bella follows along after Edward, their relationship grows more closer, more intimate, until Edward cannot keep himself away from Bella and says, "I'm tired of trying to stay away from you."
-END OF SPOILER-
The best part of this book was that it was so real, you had to wonder frequently if it really was real. Forks is an actual place in Washington, as so is Jacksonville. The line between real and fake in the book it so murky you don't care- you just want to read more and pray it never ends.
But dont't worry, the sequel, New Moon, gets better too.
This book is awesome! Once you start reading - it is very hard to put down.
A friend recommended I read this book, and I'm glad I did.
It is the first book in a four book series, and each book gets better and better as they go along.
Once you have read "TWILIGHT" you will definately want to read the other three books, "NEW MOON" ,"ECLIPSE" and "BREAKING DAWN"
FROM INSIDE COVER:

With his porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edward is both irresistible and impenetrable. Up until now, he has managed to keep his true idenity hidden, but Bella is determined to uncover his dark secret.
What Bella doesn't realize is the closer she gets to him, the more she is putting herself and those around her at risk. And, it might be too late to turn back ...
Deeply seductive and extraordinarily suspenseful, "TWILIGHT" will have readers riveted right until the very last page is turned.

I have to rate this saga excellent. Stephenie Meyers is a genius. To take a favorite reading subject as a "Vampire", Edward Cullen, who is no killer, but aspires to be as human as possible ,to draw no attention to himself, is in highschool, will never be older than 17 years old, so gorgeous(the attraction part of the vampire lie )speaks like an angel and add an unexpected Romance with a human girl,Bella Swan, the sheriff's daughter, who just moved back to Forks to get to know her Dad,and who falls so in love with Edward, and does everything she can to get Edward to change her into a vampire so she to will be immortal and never part from him. From day one,Edward becomes devoted to Bella and her safety. His main thought is to protect her from all harm, because He can read everyones mind apart from hers.,but try as he may ,to be normal,he takes her home to meet his family of vampires. Add another twist ,Bella loves Jacob Black,a Quiletee Native Indian, who lives in LaPush reservation near Forks, these two were children together, and whose dark secret is, he has a genetic predisposition. He turns into a werewolf but only when vampires are in Forks. Stephenie Meyers gives her readers an emotional ride not to be forgotten.
I have never read any thing so exciting. I want to live there. I keep returning hour after hour unable to put the book down. Never bored, sitting on the edge waiting to see what Edward,Bella and Jake are gonna do next. How everyone is involved in the lives of these two star crossed lovers. How it becomes a triangle of love between Jacob Black, Bella and Edward. How Bella is always hanging on narrowly missing a brush with death, I am half way into Breaking Dawn and I have to say "It is unbelievably fantastic and stirring. Because of these books, I love to read again. The next problem, where am I gonna find another story line as exciting as these have been. These books are a million times better than the DVD's. Do yourself a favor and read them all, and feel the Romance, feel the love, and share in these deep dark feelings, rocking your emotions around every corner of twists and turns..
Stephanie Meyers as fanciful or capricious, a person can be on her ideas . We never know what this fantastic creature will write next.
We love your mind
I bought the book to relate to neices and nephews(I am 38) coming over the holidays when the show was to premiere at movies... Books are always more detailed in the thought process and can elaborate the story line in a more definite direction.... did I mention I love to read... so I bought both Twilight and New Moon in paperback because the cost is definitely better than the hardback prices ... both books left me driving into the next novel very fast paced...so I need instant closure so I purchased the third and fourth book at my local Wal-Mart. We took in the movie and I was glad I read the book some of the story was omitted and changed to fit the movie to the movie screens needs- and to showcase certain special effects - I can see why teens loved this story -It is a twisted romance set in High School where the teen girl falls for the guy but he's the wrong kind of guy - a vampire, but not any vampire - one with a moral conscience to live without human blood. They come to fall in love with a romantic downfall - He refuses to make her immortal because he loves her and she willingly wants to bind herself to him forever out of her love for him- I will not give away the rest- but when I finished the fourth novel my neice told me of the internet scandal where her fifth novel draft was posted online. It compromised her direction of the work she was trying to do - some of the excerpts are online but I didn't like going back and redoing the original story from Edwards viewpoint- still intresting just been there know what's happening syndrome- I just felt she could have gone on with the story and brought it into a different scope or place ... she has definite room to grow the love story of Bella & Edward and the Cullen Family .... I just know we will see more from Stephanie Meyer...
Her playlist is quite intresting also posted in the back of her books ... My 11 year old daughter was to lazy to read it herself so she used youtube to read it to her in chapters .. and also checked out some of the music videos on Stephanie's playlists..... enjoy!!!
Twilight is a teen romance novel about a young girl named Bella and her love of a teen vampire named Edward. When Bella moves to Forks to live with her dad, she is doing her immature mother a favor or so she thinks. Unfortunately her dad, "Charlie" is just as clueless as mom in the parenting department. When Bella meets an intriguing boy at school, she swiftly falls head over heels for him only to discover :gasp: that Edward is a vampire.
I found the vampire ecology of Meyer's world intriguing. I liked Edward and his family. I found Jacob (the secondary love interest) kind of bland. Bella and her parents annoyed me. Her mother is a very selfish person who thinks more of her new hubby than her own daughter. Her immaturity grated this reader. I found Charlie slightly better, but felt he should've been more of a parent to Bella and less of a 'roommate'. He is seldom around and lets Bella do many things on her own. Bella herself was agonizingly bland at times. I think she fell for Edward too quickly and then the story sort of went nowhere. There is only so much you can take of: Bella lurves Edward, Edward lurves Bella... but that's pretty much the middle section of the book. The book picks up towards the end, but overall I was left with an unsatisfied feeling. Bella's character alternates between a codepenant love for Edward and feelings of inadequacy. "why me?"
Nits: I felt the characters didn't act particularly like teenagers. Bella acted like a grown woman most of the time. I disliked her calling her father by his first name, and how she pretty much played housewife for him, cooking, cleaning, etc. The girl is a teenager. Dad is a grown man. He can learn to cook. I kind of wish Edward had been turned at a later age. To be perpetually 17 must be kind of tough to pull off as your girlfriend ages.
Overall OK characterization in the vampire department, but a bit thin plotwise for this reader.
