Editorial reviews

"Joel Coen and Ethan Coen fill the film with self-conscious good humor -- hey, it's the Coen brothers -- and the charmingly old-fashioned locutions of the Charles Portis novel."
Wall Street Journal (12/24/2010)

3.5 star out of 4 -- "The casting is always inspired and exact. The cinematography by Roger Deakins reminds us of the glory that was, and can still be, the Western."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (12/22/2010)

3 stars out of 4 -- "TRUE GRIT has sweep and scope and entertainment value to burn..."
Washington Post (12/22/2010)

"Joel and Ethan Coen have pulled off an impressive feat: repurposing a classic film with their idiosyncratic blend of dark, deadpan humor and palpable suspense..."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (12/22/2010)

"The Coens direct TRUE GRIT with a light touch....It's simultaneously rollicking and grave, alternating moments of fine dark humor with startling violence..." -- Grade: A-
A.V. Club - Keith Phipps (12/21/2010)

"The best of the new TRUE GRIT comes from the actors who bring their vivid characters to life....With typically impeccable dusty-Western cinematography by Roger Deakins..." -- Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (12/24/2010)

Included in USA Today's "10 Best Films Of 2010" -- "The Coen brothers fire on all cylinders with this remake of the 1969 Western..."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (12/31/2010)

5 stars out of 5 -- "TRUE GRIT is really about Jeff Bridges, giving another peerless performance for the Coens....Certainly with TRUE GRIT, he's done great work in a great film."
Uncut - Michael Bonner (02/01/2011)

"Both musically and visually, TRUE GRIT is a parable about good and evil. Only here, the lines between the two are so blurred as to be indistinguishable, making this a true picture of how the West was won or -- depending on your view -- lost."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (12/21/2010)

"Alternately somber, funny, elegiac and steadfastly if unconventionally moral....The Coens use the landscape beautifully, capturing the majesty of ripply baptismal rivers and craggy, charred-bone trees alike."
Movieline - Stephanie Zacharek (12/22/2010)

5 stars out of 5 -- "All credit to Damon, who plays down the Texan's vanity and braggadocio, leaving just enough of it in evidence to be funny without being off-putting."
Total Film - Philip Kemp (12/21/2010)

"The brothers clearly enjoy adopting Portis's dry plainspoken idiom....Bridges sounds as if he's talking through his collar, in a vocal performance that's entertaining no matter what he's saying..."
Film Comment - Nicolas Rapold (01/01/2011)

"The production, by their regular team, is formally superb....The Coens inject something of its macabre fairytale timbre, retaining the book's grotesque touches and adding more."
Sight and Sound - Ben Walters (02/01/2011)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "The Coens have crafted a vastly entertaining Wild West show that is memorable in every particular."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (12/21/2010)

"One of their most broadly entertaining films yet....The Coen brothers worked hard, and successfully, at serving the buoyant novel as well as being true to their own black comic brio."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (12/22/2010)

An Excellent Retelling of a Classic Story

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Jeff Bridges shines in this 2010 version of the 1969 John Wayne movie that won him a long deserved Academy Award. Jeff plays Rooster Cogburn as a much more serious U. S. Marshall with a subtle sense of humor. With 2010 morals in place, we learn that Rooster has had 2 wives and why their relationships never worked out. We could have never been told that in 1969.

But the real star of True Grit 2010 is the unknown child star Hailee Steinfeld, who portrays the Kim Darby role, Mattie Ross, who in this movie practically drafts Rooster to look for her daddy's killer, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). Rooster is much more of an unwilling hunter in this movie, and he does everything he can to keep from becoming the chaperone for Mattie.

Matt Damon plays La Boeuf, the Glen Campbell role of a Texas ranger, who is also looking for Chaney for an earlier murder in Texas. The competition between La Boeuf and Cogburn is much more evident in this movie than in the first. In the first movie, we were treated to Glen Campbell as a singer.

There is a lot of dialog in this movie, and I did not want to miss any of it as much of it was subtly humorous. It was a good time to turn on the subtitles. I highly recommend that.

There are 3 special features to this dvd. (1) the first one shows Hailee Steinfeld, who explains how she was chosen for the coveted role of Mattie Ross (2) the costume designer, Mary Zophres, discusses all the research that she made to getting the costumes right and why she picked what she did and (3) the set designer shows us how Grainger, Texas, was chosen to portray Fort Smith, Arkansas and all of the changes that were made to make it look authentic 1870-1880s.

The Coen brothers brilliantly directed all of this movie, and it shows. Thus, this movie is a reworking of what was previously a hit but now everything looks brand new and has a different flavor. They are both hits in my book.

5 star Coen western

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I avoided this because it was a remake. Noone should remake a John Wayne classic. Noone except the Coen brothers, who should just please do whatever movie they most feel like making. I am very impressed with the Coen's work.
This is much the same story we all remember, but it looks better and has better dialogue. Matt Damon is better than Glen Campbell was and Barry Pepper does great in the Duvall role. Wayne was better though I give Bridges lots of credit for even having the guts to take the role-he did fine. Really the new Mattie Ross, Hailee Steinfeld, made all the difference. She carried a lot of water, and the film is better for this change in focus. Josh Brolin had fun and I liked him here. A 5 star Coen film. Hopefully they make many more films!

I very much enjoyed this film and I will watch it more than once.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I purchased this DVD because of the movie title and the cast, particularly the actor in the lead role. I saw and remember the original version of the movie starring John Wayne. I also admire the Coen brothers and, although I don't always enjoy their films, I respect their ability to tell a story.

I thought this story was rendered very well and scripted very close to the original movie. The imagery and the character development are excellent.

I would definitely recommend this film to others. It's very much worth the time.

Both true grit movies were great. The difference in the two movies was the fact that the main star of the first True Grit movie"JOHN WAYNE" was a LEGEND in his own time,as well as a great American patriot. As for myself,I had to have a copy of both movies. The movie ad says it all "Great Film making,Great Acting,Great Movie".Thank You For Letting Me Comment.
