I bought this HDDVD player because in addition to my Blu-ray collection I have many HD DVD's that I want to keep. I previously had only the XBOX add on HDDVD player and bought this one for use in another room. If you're someone like me who already has an HDDVD collection or even want to continue to buy them on eBay or elsewhere ( you can get them MUCH cheaper than their Blu-ray version equivalents) then this is a fine player. This player hooks up easily, has an HDMI output and plays in 1080P where other players may only play in 1080I max (so do your research). Also you can still buy one used or new at a VERY reasonable price. Picture quality is great also upconverts standard DVD's and has an easy to use remote. There's nothing not to like if you want an HDDVD player that can utilize the highest resolution possible (remember this does not play Blu-ray). I recommend it highly.
First it took forever to finally receive the player. Not the fault of the seller! Now I finally get it and it is not as described. Stated as new and never used. Remote shows definite signs of use. So I go to watch a movie which is brand new and about 15 minutes into it it stops and gives an error code. SO I try another brand new movie. The same thing again only this time I watched about 45 minutes. Now frustated I try another brand new movie and it happens again. This really sucks. I then try 2 used movies I got at FYI and the same thing. Same error code everytime stating it cannot play the movie. I have tried all the movies numerous times and they all get the error code at some point during playback. Never at the same part though, always at different points. I do not believe this seller told the truth about the player.
The player does exactly what I needed it to do. Serve as my primary player of HD-DVD's, while my HD-XA2 serves as my DVD upconverter. Build quality is simple and the unit looks nice next to my Blu player. Otherwise, the menu setup is the standard Toshiba HD-DVD variety, and if you are even considering buying this item, you probably don't need another explanation of the player's finer points. The only letdown for this unit is the lack of bitstreaming, but for the price I paid? No biggie.
It wasn't until after I received this player that I found out about a common problem with this model- it won't output ANY sound at all from HD-DVDs, and will only output Dolby Digital and DTS from standard DVDs- if you have a standard DVD with a PCM audio track, it won't output that either. Mine was tested on 2 different receivers, and research found others with this model had the same problem but nobody knows what causes it. Firmware upgrades didn't help. At least I can use the drive from this in my A2 if that ever dies- though that player can't output 1080P as this one can, it's still better than having no sound!
I purchased this player to up-grade to 1080p but the wrong model was delivered but the vendor made the transaction good. I am extremely happy with the dvd player and movies. also now I am enjoying the purchased at home. Great vendor!!! Thanks for making a bad transaction a good one. FJV
