Movie synopsis
A Japanese-American co-production, director Richard Fleischer (SOYLENT GREEN) and two Japanese directors put together this ultrarealistic account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor as presented from the perspectives of both nations, as diplomatic tensions rise between the two countries. While the Japanese military plans its attack on American military installations, the American forces nearly stumble into a much greater calamity due to a series of errors and mistakes. As the two sides plunge closer to war, the tension escalates until the final, spectacular air raid, the most realistic ever filmed. This ITA award winner has a fabulous cast, including Martin Balsam, Joseph Cotten, Jason Robards, James Whitmore, and E.G. Marshall.

Historically accurate account of Pearl Harbour attack

This particular movie tries to be as accurate as the history books permit. The acting is excellent and many of the actors are big names even to this day. The realism is increased by the Japanese dialog with English subtitles. I normally am not a fan of subtitles but in the case of this movie it seems to add to the realism of the production. There are a great many Japanese actors in this movie and tons of extras from both sides of the ocean. I find that this movie differs from the much more recent production of the movie called Pearl Harbour in that the latter seems to concentrate more on romantic entanglements of the people in the movie and the actual historical aspects of Pearl Harbour seem to take a back seat to the plot. This is an action movie that everyone should see to get some idea of the actual events of the attack on Pearl Harbour. TORA! TORA! TORA! should be a part of the study of the history of World War II in every high school. We tend to look to Hollywood for newer and better movies every year but a great many of the older movies such as this one made in 1970 were done very well and told a good story. We should not ignore old movies just because they are old but we should look for the very best of the old movies and enjoy them. If you are too young to remember when this movie first came out then it is new to you so enjoy it with that fact in mind.

Comprehensive

As a pre-kindergartener, I, along with my family, lived through the attack on Pearl Harbor. Since then, I have been interested in the attack and how it was portrayed in films. This one is the best film made to date on the attack. It appears to be based on Prof. Gordon Prenge's historical books, specifically "At Dawn We Slept." The details of the film are clearly the result of careful hiastorical research, and the film is a co-production, with a United States crew filming the American side leading up to the conflict, and a Japanese crew filming the Nipponese story. The Japanese segments are subtitled.

A few points in the film were inserted to educate the audience. For instance, neither officer assigned to the MAGIC decrypts of the top-secret Japanese PURPLE messages had to explain to the other how the arrangement worked, but without the explanation, the audience wouldn't appreciate what was happening when a message was intercepted.

Most Pearl Harbor films go easy on the preparation and the attack, but this one provides a really good perspective for viewers who want to know the dynamics leading up to the United States' entry into World War II.

Comparable to history - a sign of a good movie!

Review For: Tora! Tora! Tora! (DVD, 1999)

Very enjoyable to watch and then compare it to the historical records - you'll be very hard pressed to find discrepancies (differences of opinion, perhaps). Using real events as references, this story in "Tora! Tora! Tora!" is fairly realistically and relates the Japanese version of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. For it's day, it was outstanding photography. This is a historically accurate DVD movie (Norht American format, 1999 release). A definate "must-see" film and one that belongs in the library of a historian or militaria collector. Highly recommended. A must-see Japanese version of Pearl Harbor

A definate "must-see" DVD film (2006 release on a North American format) and one that belongs in the library of a historian or militaria collector. Using real events as references, "Tora! Tora! Tora!" is fairly realistically and relates the Japanese version of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. For it's day, it was outstanding photography. Very enjoyable to watch and then compare it to the historical records - you'll be very hard pressed to find discrepancies (differences of opinion, perhaps). The Japanese actor who played Yamamoto did a particularly outstanding job portraying this Admiral. This is a historically accurate movie. Highly recommended.
