This was the first time using a gps. My daughter programed it for us and week took off to Florida last month. The commands took some time getting use to. When we were coming up on a turn and it said stay right, it meant stay in the right hand lane and not to turn. So, do not get in a turn lane until it says turn right. This may be simple for others but for someone who never used a gps before it only took one wrong turn to understand what it was saying. It took us right to the place we were staying but when I went to visit an Aunt in Melbourne, Florida, her address was not in the gps. We still got to the general vicinity and was able to figure out the rest only because I had been there before. One thing, I especially liked was the speed I was going was posted on the right side of the gps and the speed limit was posted beside it and it turned red when you were exceeding the speed limit. (There were several times the speed limit was not correct in the area we were in.) It told you the departure and arrival time at your destination and this recalculated when we stopped to get gas, etc. You know, after 50 years without one, you wonder how you got anywhere. Thanks for a great product and can't wait to use it again.
Apparently there's great misunderstanding of Tomtom units, so I'm writing this explanation, based on what Tomtom Support said. This applies to all Tomtom models.
Each model has modifications: S, T, M, and TM. S is the minimum, T gives lifetime traffic updates, M gives lifetime map updates.
These T and M however are not represented in the unit itself in any way. The units themselves are the same.
What makes it T is special power cord that has a "bulb" on it. That "bulb" is the antenna that receives traffic.
What makes it M is the activation code printed on piece of paper put in the box.
So if you see a listing that sells any model TM but says that the code is not included, this is misrepresentation. Without the code, there's no "M". Or if someone sells power supply without the bulb and says it's for TM model, it's also misrepresentation, since without the be won't be "T". If you buy model TM or M without the code and then call Tomtom and say "I purchased M model, give me updates", their answer will be that without the code you bought no M, and they don't guarantee units sold on eBay. Same if you buy power cord without the bulb - there's no T then and no traffic.
On the other hand, you can buy model S, then purchase on Amazon the code for lifetime map updates ($99 as of this writing), then your unit becomes M.
I would Highly recommend this GPS to anyone who travels at all,It is far Superior to Garmin. This unit is so exact on location it shows if I am Pulled in or Backed in to my Garage.and if you get off your track it readjusts your route at lightning speed. My Garmin I had to literally pull off the road for it to re-calculate my direction. This unit can have an address entered while in motion and still gives you a correct map so fast.I would never buy another GPS that is not a TomTom and with other company's,even TomTom's that do not have free Lifetime Map upgrades your going to spen around $75.00 to $100.00 for Map Upgrades. With any TomTom that has TM at the end you get FREE Lifetime Map and Traffic Updates. The only bad thing I can say is Do not buy a used one unless it has the Proper Charger if you have a Model with Real Traffic.SOme models just for that cord can cost upwards of 75-100 Bucks. But if you dont care about live Traffic you can buy the TomTom with the TM on the end for a GREAT PRICE,any charger that fits it will work, you just won't get live traffic updates, without the right cord.I have bought 3 for my different Vehicles.
i have two vehicles and it was real hassle to move one gps from one to the other.the advance lane guidance is a real help on interstate roads its not as easy to program as easy as the older ones.it has more features than the older ones,is worth buying as a second GPS or replacement.
Tom Tom is very easy to use. In my opinion it is one of the most user friendly devices I have ever used. Extremely reliable and helpful when I go anyplace, that I am not sure where I am going. I highly recommend this product.
