This unit replaced a magellan that was 5 years old. A major improvement in operation. Adequate warning for turns was not a magellan forte, this unit does well. Spend time working with the menu before travel to get used to the variations. It is easy to customize. On road it seems quite accurate and helps if wrong turn is made. I find it very useful to plan trips in advance to get an idea of routes. the alternate route feature is great in that it gives you options before you travel. strongly recommend getting a 110 volt to 12 volt adapter for charging at home. they are available at some electronics stores cheap and dont need to charge in car.
I am so glad I updated with this unit
Although this gps maybe a lower number of feature than others, it has more than enough to satisfy travel needs. What a gps with a lot of bells and whistles will end up doing is distracting the driver from the primary duty, driving. I have used other gps units from both Tomtom and Garmin(the Garmin had a ton of features) and my family really prefer Tomtom. Having the lifetime maps will reduce the cost of ownership by not having to pay for renewals.
Bought it to get me to unfamiliar places as quickly as possible. It also gives the estimated arrival time which is helpful. I like the lifetime traffic & maps feature which work great. If you don't put in a destination the display has less information than with a destination. This is unfortunate but typical of most GPS. The ETA seems to be quite accurate even when there are a lot of traffic lights in route which surprises me. The Traffic status bar indicates problems along your route if present. It works but I haven't had one which rerouted me to avoid the delay yet. Daughter has a Garmin GPS which doesn't appear to work any better than this TomTom and it cost much more.
Easy to read display. Difficult to start downloading free maps due to some glitch. Tech support was helpful, but it took a long tome to resolve.(several hours).Faster than my tomtom ONE to locate signal, but sometimes had its difficulties. I bought this for the lifetime traffic & map updates and because of screen size. Price was also a factor. Audio is not as loud as my ONE, but is acceptable.
After having one of the other brands for many years, it was fun figuring out all the differences between the two.
I like the ease of the many features of the Tom Tom, some of which I never did figure out with the other.
Take the time to play with your new toy and get to know what it can do and you won't be disappointed. Take the time to use it in a area you know and use the different features like detours, gas, food and points of interest. Then when you get on the road you won't be scratching your head in a strange place. The main reason I bought the Tom Tom was for the life time up dates for when we travel I have one less worry to deal with. An Amazing Tool !
