Album Notes
Personnel: Burt Bacharach (flugelhorn, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer); John Pagano, Josie James, Donna Taylor (vocals); Ted Perlman (synthesizer, programming); Denaun Porter (bass instrument, drum); Mike Elizondo (bass instrument); John "J.R." Robinson (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion).Everything from the dressed-down cover art (Burt Bacharach in sweat pants?) to the collaborations that power the music within (beats and bass loops by Dr. Dre?) indicate that AT THIS TIME is a radical departure for the king of suave, easy-listening pop. "Please Explain," the loungy, trip-hop-inflected opener, with its combination of electronic programming, cool Fender Rhodes, and synthesized instrumentation, sets the tone for the album. The second track, the jazz-drenched "Where Did It Go?" continues the vibe with its string-sweetened groove and saxophone solos, not to mention Bacharach's own strangely moving, half-spoken confessional verses.Yet Bacharach's trademark handiwork is everywhere, from the charming tenderness of his music and lyrics, to the polish of his arrangements, to the sophistication and expressiveness of his performances. Additionally, AT THIS TIME has striking themes that move beyond Bacharach's usual domain of romance to question politics, war, and the nature of time. Appearances by Elvis Costello ("Who Are These People"), Rufus Wainwright ("Go Ask Shakespeare"), and Dr. Dre ("Danger") help make AT THIS TIME a varied, engaging listen, and prove that Bacharach, far from resting on his laurels, is pushing himself in new directions.

Fresh & New Bacharach Songs!

Long anticipated album of new material by the legendary pop composer genius. This album won the 2006 Grammy for Pop Instrumental Album of the Year so that's really saying something about it. But having grown up on his greatest works of the 1960s and 1970s, this album, "At This Time," sounds terrific and other times a little thin. After about 8 plays, it started to come together into a nice, neat package. Bacharach's first album to have lyrics written by him yet feel weak. Would have enjoyed having Hal David contribute. Very glad he released this album, some very beautiful moments of the Bacharach mark. Refreshing to hear new Bacharach!

At This Time CD opinion

I bought this CD after viewing Burt Bacharach in concert, where he played some of this CD. It is very diffferent from his traditional music and took some getting used to, however, if you are a true Bacharach fan, you will enjoy his talent in this new dimension of musical entertainment.

A Thoughtful Bacharach Fans Will Appreciate

Heard some songs from the CD at a Bacharach concert recently. Made post 9/11, this CD is more thoughtful and personal than previous songs Bacharach has recorded. Thoroughly enjoyable.
