I saw this movie on tv as a mini-series about 15+ years ago, and I remembered it as being very good. I had looked for it on VHS or DVD before, but just never found it. On a fluke, I typed in the title on e-bay last month, and there it was, so I bought it.
It's very romantic. It's definitely a "chick-flick." It stars Courtney Cox, Mia Sara, Hugh Grant, Bruce Boxleitner, Michael York, and many others. Hugh Grant plays a rotten scoundrel, so don't rent/buy just because of him because he is very unlikeable in this movie.
The movie scans about 20-30 years. Most of the movie takes place 1920's to 1940's. My favorite part of the movie was Courtney Cox's two romances in the movie. The first romance with Barry Bostwick who played her airplane pilot instructor and she grew up loving him......and the second romance (which was my favorite) with Bruce Boxleitner who was her husband's best friend who was always secretly in love with her.
Mia Sara plays Courtney Cox's sister who is an actress who falls in love with a movie director who is Jewish. Being Jewish during World War II was very dangerous even in France, so her story is mainly about all they go through to be together.
It's definitely not a good movie to go to the theater to watch, but it's perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon with popcorn kind of movie. Make sure hubby is elsewhere because he will definitely be bored with this.
The reason I bought the DVD is because I am a fan of Bruce Boxleitner. After watching it for the first time I decided to then read the novel of the same title by Judith Krantz. I found the movie to have a close correlation to the novel. I like when a novel isn't changed drastically when made into a movie or mini series. The movie had a great cast. Besides Bruce Boxleitner there was Michael York, Hugh Grant, Barry Bostwick, John Vickery and a very young Courteney Cox. I enjoyed the movie and felt that the entire cast did a wonderful job in portraying the author's characters.
The movie was great. It was made quite a few years ago, but if you loved it on TV you will love it on DVD...enjoy
This is an excellent movie, a bit of a tear jerker at times, also- If you are buying this for Hugh Grant, he is an evil man through the whole movie and you will despise his character.
I love this miniseries!!!! I've had it in VHS version, and when I notice the DVD promotion quickly I bought it. It's excellent!!!
