Although Clint Eastwood's more famous role as a cop is in the action packed Dirty Harry series, he's in New Orleans this time as the cucumber cool Wes Block. Our protagonist is pursuing a serial killer with kinky sex penchants who is initially going after prostitutes. But Block discovers he may have more in common with the suspect than he cares to admit. Hence the title, as he must walk that tightrope.
Tightrope shows more of his home life, as a divorced father, than we usually see in cop movies. His real life daughter, Alison Eastwood, plays one of his daughters, Amanda. (Following this debut Alison has been in a dozen or so movies since). This character development adds to the impact when Amanda, as well as Wes's romantic interest (Genevieve Bujold), become targets. The killer is making this personal, which actually facilitates solving the case.
Tightrope is rich in pre-Katrina New Orleans scenes, including Mardi gras, plenty of jazz, and adult entertainment venues. Ironically, one bar shown in the background is called the Hurricane. Eastwood is famous for sayinbg just what he thinks, and my favorite zinger is about 1:05 into the movie. Look for it when he and Bujold are having dinner aboard a ship.
This is not what I would call an action movie. But the mystery and suspense will keep you on edge.
Clint plays a cop on the edge and becomes involved in the underworld while trying to solve a case. He knows that what he is doing is wrong but can't help himself. I like the pull he is under and enjoy the movie very much. I had been looking for this for a long time and glad to have it.
I was suprised His daughter was in it ,,,in such light . I saw it on Netflix and bought it . One of the best and least known Eastwood flix .
Clint Eastwood is the man.He needs to start acting again.
