I bought the movie because I like Helen Hunt and Colin Firth and it seemed to be light hearted and entertaining. It proved to be just that. There were parts of the movie which were painful to Helen Hunt's character, but it was very true to life as one might expect. I would recommend the movie.
I thought that I would like this movie, so I bought it at some store and watched it. What a dissapointment. Midler had a small part, Helen Hunt was not as good as normally is and the whole plot of the story was so dull and boring. It could have been a good story but I just don't think it was. Not funny at all. If you must see it, I would rent it.
Matthew Broderick's character suited him; I've seen Bette Midler in much better productions; Helen Hunt is showing her age...as is Colin Firth...but the difference is, he remains very handsome, & very sexy.
On the plus side: We get to see Colin portray very dark anger, & deeply wrathful indignation, borne of hurt pride & hurt feelings, to a higher power than ever before...& hear oddly rare-sounding obscenities spewing forth from that sensual mouth. A bit unsettling.
The movie was slow-moving, but did have its tender moments, even sadness.
I only bought it to add to my Colin Firth collection.

I bought this movie simply because of Bette Midler. Such a shame. Her acting was stiff, and lacking the energy and vibrance she normally displays. It was almost as if she was being forced to hold back. The story dragged on. None of the well known actors could do anything to save it. Bette looked over weight and tired. Helen Hunt looked much older than her 39 year old character. Matthew Broderick's acting was less than desirable. All and all a sad misuse of some talented folks. I'm sorry I spent the money.
Helen Hunt wasted everybody's time on this one...including her actor friends who helped support her on this bomb, and the audience who had to sit through this terrible film. Helen...please stick to acting, and please let someone else direct your films. This is a great example of an actor trying to do something that they know nothing about. What a waste.
