Ben Affleck stars at Doug MacRay, a local boy who almost made it in the big time as a Professional Hockey player but now is back home with his neighborhood pals doing what they know best, planning heists and bank jobs. The trick is to not end up like his father who is serving a life sentence for a botched job. After a bank job, he gets to know Claire, one of the managers at the bank and the two hit it off. Only problem is the Boston PD and FBI are watching.
This was a very good movie. It was entertaining and keeps your attention through most of the show. Affleck, who also directed the movie, gives one of his best performances and the rest of the cast do a good job as well.
The Cast Includes: Ben Affleck as Doug MacRay, Jon Hamm as Special Agent Adam Frawley, Rebecca Hall as Claire Keesey, Jeremy Renner as James "Jem" Coughlin, Blake Lively as Krista Coughlin, Chris Cooper as Stephen MacRay, Slaine as Albert "Gloansy" Magloan, Titus Welliver as Dino Ciampa, Pete Postlethwaite as Fergie the Florist, Owen Burke as Desmond "Dez" Elden, and Edward O'Keefe as Morton Previt.
This is a movie that is very real to life and anyone who loves a good crime drama will enjoy this one.
Ben Affleck follows his acclaimed Gone Baby Gone directorial debut by directing, co-writing and starring in a taut thriller about robbers and cops, friendship and betrayal, love and hope and escaping a past that has no future. He plays Doug MacRay, leader of a Boston bank robber gang but not cut from the same cloth as his fellow thieves. When Doug falls into a passionate romance with the bank manager (Rebecca Hall) briefly taken hostage in their last heist, he wants out of this life and out of the town. As the Feds close in and the crew questions his loyalty, he has one of two choices: betray his friends or lose the woman he loves.
The advertisements on the New York City Mass Transit Buses looked so familiar, then otherworldly, then sinister..... I couldn't figure out what was being said - like I usually can - within a few moments of looking at an ad on a New York City Mass Trasit Bus. I found myself actually having to pause and READ what those ads with those actors pictured in those boxes below what appeared to be clergy-persons with mishappen faces in ecclisiastical uniforms ... said. Present-day = Latter-Day robberies of some sort is what I gathered this newest take on one of Hollywood's oldest subjects to be. I've seen some of the best of this genre from Hlwd's "Golden Era" and beyond. What else could this soon to be DVD tell me?
Fast forward several month's later. I am in earnest, arm-chair, pursuit of SOMETHING worthwhile. SOMETHING action packed. SOMETHING even inexpensively priced. SOMETHING perhaps made within the last few years to enjoy that can provide half the quality all these Hlwd G R E A T S of yesteryear I've bought online manage to provide when there it is: THE TOWN, and I have no idea whether it is even worth the shipping & handling...
Okay! Besides this movie's providing a kind of present-day, exhilirated, snap-shot, post-card, tour of parts of urban Massachusetts, THE TOWN really I S as good as ye "GOLDEN ERA" Cops and Robbers Classics, many of which if you've seen a n y of them - it will remind you of. If you've never seen any of those -and you c a n tolerate fine acting, good directing, and scripts with substance that lack nudity, buckets of blood, and gore - you just might enjoy this movie as well. YOU just might... Or you might not! I know I did. This movie was definitly worth the V E R Y reasonable price plus the shipping and handling I paid for it!
compelling, complex and cracking with suspense afflecks sophomore effort is every bit good as his first foray into feature film making. using chuck hogan's 2005 novel prince of thieves as a starting point and letting his narrative play out over a languid but legitimately intense two plus hour pace the town initially takes one by surprise. with heroes and villains all over the place this movie is worth the time to watch.
This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Ben Affleck does an amazing job both acting & directing this gritty movie. For once, I was rooting for the bad guys to win & not get caught. It is action packed & keeps you on your toes the entire movie! I have seen this movie 5 times already and have added it to my collection so I can watch it any time I want.
