Movie synopsis
Based on the novel of the same name by Gerald Petievich, THE SENTINEL offers a rare look at the world of the Secret Service and questions what would happen if an insider were involved in a plot to kill the President of the United States. Agent Pete Garrison (Michael Douglas) has earned his stripes and is a fixture in the Secret Service. In 1981, he took a bullet during the assassination attempt on President Reagan. More than twenty years later, he is an essential element in the first line of defense for current first lady Sarah Ballentine (Kim Basinger). But Garrison has some secrets--secrets that could end his career if they were discovered. When a plot to assassinate President John Ballentine (David Rasche) is suspected, Garrison finds himself the primary suspect. Heading the investigation is Agent David Breckenridge (Kiefer Sutherland), who is convinced that Garrison--his former best friend and mentor--slept with his wife. With the help of rookie agent Jill Marin (Eva Longoria), who was trained by Garrison, Breckenridge is determined to crack the case and keep the president safe--even if it means taking Garrison down. When accused of treason, Garrison leads Breckenridge and the other agents on a wild chase and the truth becomes more and more twisted. Is Garrison running in order to escape, or is he trying to prove his innocence while protecting his secrets? Can Breckenridge put aside his old grudge and make decisions based strictly on the evidence presented? Will Marin's allegiance remain with her new supervisor, or with Garrison, the field instructor who recommended her for her new assignment? Most important, can the agents uncover the truth before more of their colleagues--and the president--die? Directed by Clark Johnson (S.W.A.T.), who appears as Agent Charlie Merriweather, the film also features Martin Donovan, Ritchie Coster and Blair Brown.

Editorial reviews

"[A]n unassuming thriller, a nifty piece of genre filmmaking without frills or self-importance. It's a throwback, if you will, to the days of B pictures, when formula movies were made with a maximum of skill and a minimum of pretense."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (04/21/2006)

"Director Clark Johnson has an energetic style of filmmaking and a facile way with stunts and chase sequences.."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (04/21/2006)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Sutherland makes this stuff look easy. There's a fine and twitchy father-son chemistry between him and Douglas..."
Total Film - Ceri Thomas (09/01/2006)

The Sentinel Sizzles With Veteran Actors And Good Plot

For those who really appreciate films that gather top Box Office Draws From Yesteryear, this film really sizzles with Michael Douglas and Kim Basinger as secret lovers hiding there feelings in the most unsuspecting way.

Although The Sentinel was a remake, the story by Gerald Petievich seems to be just as powerful todays as it was when it first hit the screen.

Pete Garrision (Michael Douglas) works for Secret Service in a high ranking capacity and is duly trusted by his President and his peers, however, he has a big secret. He's having an affair with First Lady Sarah Ballentin (Kim Basinger). If discovered, he could lose his well earned stripes as a permanent fixture in the Secret Service ever since he took a bullet for President Ronald Reagan. His decades of service have paid off, as he is now in charge of protecting the First Lady from harm.

It comes to the attention of special investigator Agent David Breckenridge (Kiefer Sutherland) that there is a mole planted within the secret service with a plan to assassinate President John Ballentine (David Rasche).

Garrison soon finds himself the primary suspect when he fails the lie-detector test. New special agent Jill Marin (Eva Longoria) also feels unsure about Garrison, but later helps Garrison prove his innocence. Breckenridge is convinced that Garrison slept with his wife years before, which damaged their friendship. This was really not the case, but somehow, Breckenridge could never believe otherwise.

Breckenridge seemed hell-bent to take Garrison down. After much ado, Garrison is finally accused of treason because of circumstances keep pointing to his involvement, which somehow, Garrison implicates himself by waiting for an secret meeting at a Foreign Coffee Shop. Garrison begins a wild goose chase with cat and mouse as the truth becomes less clear.

Is Garrison running in order to escape, or is he trying to prove his innocence while protecting his secrets? We may never stop the mole from completing his task. Director Clark Johnson (S.W.A.T.) also appears in the film as Agent Charlie Merriweather. Other featured actors include Martin Donovan, Ritchie Coster, and Blair Brown who is just as beautiful now as she was 25 years ago.

I'll give this film a 4/5 for intense action and suspense.

The Sentinel Is Sensational

The Sentinel is a great story about a plot to assassinate the President of the United States and the secret service believes one of their own men is in on the plan. Pete Garrison (Michael Douglas) is one of the lead men in the secret service, he was the guy who took a bullet during the attempted assissination of President Reagan. Everyone in the service knows him and most everyone trusts him. So when David Breckenridge (Kiefer Sutherland)lead detective of the social service believes he is in on the plot, no one believes him. But Pete Garrison, one of the most loyal men in the service, is he really in on the plot?
The Acting in this film is top notch a great cast as said, Micheal Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland are the main characters but you can't leave out the beautiful Eva Longoria, Kim Basinger and Paul Calderon.
This is a must see especially if you like watching 24, or enjoyed movies like the Fugitive. Lots of thrills and flawless action scenes.

Surprisingly Good Film

The Sentinel centers around the Secret Service and its protection of the President of the United States and the First Lady. Michael Douglas is a senior Secret Service Agent tasked to protect the First Lady played by Kim Basinger. Douglas eventually discovers that a traitor, who is inside the Secret Service, is involved in a plot to assassinate the president. Eventually, however, he is accused of being the mole and his protege, Kiefer Sutherland, takes over the investigation to find and stop him. Assisting Sutherland is another Secret Service Agent, Eva Longoria, who was also trained by Douglas.

There wasn't a lot of fanfare when this movie was first released and it sort of disappeared in the movie theatres. I therefore didn't expect much when I saw it on dvd and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the film. Michael Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland are both good in their roles, as is Longoria. Kim Basinger has what is basically a cameo role as the First Lady but her performance, as usual, is very good. Further, the action sequences are good and the plot, while certainly having some holes in it, keeps you guessing as it unfolds. The shoot-em-up ending was predictable however, but still fun to watch, and overall the movie was pretty enjoyable.

DVD The Sentinel

When a government agent is murdered in the nation's capital, veteran Secret Service agent Pete Garrison heads up the investigation, but all the evidence seems to point to him as the prime suspect. Convinced the setup is part of a plan to infiltrate the White House, Garrison works to prove his innocence -- and protect the president and first lady -- while butting heads with his former protégé.

The Sentinel DVD 2006

This is a pretty good movie. Kiefer Sutherland, Michael Douglas Eva Longoria and Kim Basinger star in this movie. In 144 years there has never been a traitor in the Secret Service, until now. And the main problem is the evidence points to Pete Garrison one of the best Agents in the Secret Service. Now that Garrison has escaped, he must find out who is trying to assasinate the President before it's to late all the while having two of the best Agents in the Service, (Sutherland and Longoria) trying to get to Garrison quickly. The reason I gave 4 out of 5 stars is because I thought it was good but I thought there would be more action. It is definitly worth renting and maybe buying it.
