Movie synopsis
THE RULES OF ATTRACTION, based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, stars James Van Der Beek (DAWSON'S CREEK) as Sean Bateman, campus drug-dealer and 24-hour-a-day reveler at affluent Camden College. A senior at the New England school, Sean is caught up in a nihilistic love triangle. He has a crush on Lauren (Shannyn Sossamon), an arty virgin who is saving herself for a vapid, vacationing ex-boyfriend, while Paul (Ian Somerhalder), a beautiful bisexual, has a crush on Sean. Every night is a party at Camden, where students celebrate with a "Dress to Get Screwed" theme and teachers appear more often on the dance floor than in the classroom. Director Roger Avary conveys the individual angst of the three lovelorn main characters in a series of vignettes, using their different perspectives to weave together a complex tale of misunderstanding, drug binges, alienated sex and violence, and above all, extreme loneliness. Equal parts fantasy and reality, THE RULES OF ATTRACTION, like other Ellis adaptations LESS THAN ZERO and AMERICAN PSYCHO, is a deeply observant, daring antiestablishment film. Camden College and its characters resonate with the very real despair and rebellion of many generations of university students.

Great plot, great theme, but not for everybody!

Review For: The Rules of Attraction (DVD, 2003)

The Rules of Attraction is one of my favorite movies, so I may be biased, but I will attempt to review the movie fairly! First off, the movie is not appropriate nor intended for everybody. There is an overwhelming amount of sex, drug use, profanity....you get the idea. However, this approach does a wonderful job of conveying the satirical and pessimistic view of college life. Many other reviewers complained about the introduction to the movie, but I feel that after the first five minutes the viewer already has a decently good idea of who the main characters are and what parts they will play in the movie.
Roger Avary does an excellent job of taking a very complex story and making all of the pieces fit in the end. I will admit, though, that you will have questions after the first time you watch it. It took me several viewings to understand all the intricacies of the movie.
One of the reasons this movie is important is because it touches on many taboos in American society. As a college student, I have experienced and witnessed many aspects of this movie. I will grant that parts are exaggerated, but lets not forget this movie is meant to be shocking and appalling. However, the extent of the partying, drug use, and other parts of the movie are accurate in some settings! (It's kind of scary to think about that after seeing the movie, though!)
The bottom line is that if you like movies that have you thinking and questioning things days after you watch them, you will probably like this movie. If you like slapstick comedy or movies that don't require much thought, this is probably not the movie for you.

Weird, Funny, and pretty entertaining!!

Review For: The Rules of Attraction (DVD, 2003)

I bought this movie on Ebay after a friend told me that the main character, Sean, was Patrick Bateman's (of American Psycho fame), little brother. I got the movie halfway expecting a slasher movie, but it turned out to be very funny but with a darker sense of humor than you'd expect from a fairly well known cast. Another Ellis book to movie gone good!!

Review of Attraction

Review For: The Rules of Attraction (DVD, 2003)

Decent movie. James Van Der Beek stinks and puts in a walktrough performance. Ian Somberhalder is alot better and can't beleive his career hasn't been better.

Is a movie to be seen by those who like there movies anti-establishment.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Loosely follows the novel in plot, but the images are a tour de force. Ultimatly unforgettable and definitly shines. Both James Van Der Beek and Jessica Biel depart from their normal type of role. I cannot see another movie affecting me as this one did on the clear horizon. Also the music is worth noting as being excellent as it never failed to fit the scene.

I've been waiting for a genuine North American blu-ray release for a few years and my wish has finally been granted. Picked it up immediatly and I wasn't disappointed. The extras are intriguing and tell about many behind the scenes ideas and goings on. Since this is one of my favorites of all time I'm going to be keeping this for the rest of my life.

I want to give kudos to the filmmakers for this great
achievement. Easily 5 stars.

A chilling view into human sexuality

Review For: The Rules of Attraction (DVD, 2003)

The first time I saw this movie I just though it was about college relationships but then I read the book. This opened up a whole new world on how our instincts control us. I recommend this to anyone who likes a movie that makes you think.
