Movie synopsis
Weary of being alone in the vast forest, unicorn Amalthea (Mia Farrow) begins to wonder if she's the last of her kind. Following a rumor, she joins forces with feeblish wizard Schmendrick (Alan Arkin) and wayward barmaid Molly (Tammy Grimes) to look for the mystical Red Bull, a creature known to hunt and imprison unicorns. In order to walk unnoticed among men, Schmendrick magically transforms Amalthea into a beautiful woman. Together the three embark on a adventurous journey into the dark land of King Haggard, the man rumored to control the Red Bull. Based on Peter Beagle's novel of the same name, THE LAST UNICORN is a bright, colorful tale about love and loss. Farrow loans her fluttering voice indelibly to the lips of the unicorn, and Arkin is spot on playing the spell-casting wizard Schmendrick. The film also features the vocal talents of Jeff Bridges, Christopher Lee, and Angela Lansbury. Complete with an over-the-top soundtrack by the pop band America, THE LAST UNICORN is perhaps the high point of directors Arthur Rankin's and Jules Bass's film career. (They would soon move out of film to produce the two highly successful syndicated television series THUNDERCATS and SILVERHAWKS.)

New York Times - Janet Maslin (11/19/1982)

"THE LAST UNICORN has a stellar voice cast....The film is episodic in the best fantasy tradition, tracking the unicorn and a magician as they encounter eccentric characters and dangerous villains..."

The Last Unicorn - spoilers!!!

The Last Unicorn is and always has been one of my favorite movies of all time! If you love unicorns - you can't pass up this animated movie about the last unicorn.

The movie starts out: a unicorn standing in the middle of the woods, wondering is she the last? What has happened to the rest of the unicorn - surely she cannot be the LAST. The unicorn learns from a butterfly that a powerful force known as the Red Bull has herded all the unicorns to the ends of the earth. She searches out to find other unicorn, but to her dismay she is captured and put on display in a freak circus - however mortal men cannot see the magical horn (they see unicorns as horses or mares), so of course there is magic involved. She escapes with the help of a friendly incompetent magician and starts her journey again. Other characters join later. When the unicorn reaches the castle of King Haggard, supposed keeper of the Red Bull she has an encounter with the Red Bull and she learns she cannot combat him, however Schmendrick (the magician) at the last moment changes the unicorn into a human to protect her. In human form, the Red Bull is not interested in her and leaves.

Schmendrick, Molly (another character), and the strange young woman go to King Haggard's castle (which of course is at the ends of the earth) and seek entry so they can possibly learn more. The new human formed unicorn is introduced to the King as Lady Amalthea. The magician tries to find a way to stay with the King, as the only occupants in the castle are the King and his adopted son Prince Lir. The King, for dark and mysterious reasons of his own lets them stay, replacing his competent on-call wizard with Schmendrick, and setting Molly to work in the kitchen. Gradually forgetting who she was, Amalthea (the unicorn) becomes more and more human with each day passing, and falls in love with the Prince. In a mixed complexity of fate and feelings, she must struggle with losing her immortal self even as she continues to find out what the King has done with the unicorns. It is later revealed that the King, having grown bored with almost everything that life has to offer, ordered the Red Bull to herd the unicorns of the world into the sea beside his castle. There he alone could watch his unicorns, the one thing that still gave him a measure of happiness.

In the end, Schmendrick, Molly, Lir, and Amalthea confront the Red Bull in his lair. Schmendrick reverses the spell, turning Amalthea back into the unicorn, but she does not want to leave Lir. The Bull drives her toward the ocean, as he drove all the other unicorns, but Lir comes between them and is killed. Grieving, the unicorn turns on the Bull and forces him into the sea. The other unicorns come out of the water, destroying Haggard's castle as they rush past; the unicorn restores Lir to life before she, too, returns to her home in the forest.

Little girls LOVE this movie! If you aren't a little girl and you have a fascination with unicorns, you won't be disappointed with this movie! Simply one of the best unicorn movies ever made!

Utterly Depressing - a nightmare

Review For: The Last Unicorn (DVD, 2007, 25th Anniversary Ed.)

What a depressing movie! We found snippets of it on YouTube set to pretty music and decided to buy it for our four year old daughter who is, of course, obsessed with unicorns. We popped it in and were horrified by the violent storyline, drab color palette, decaying scenery, grotesquely animated characters and morbid soundtrack. This was somebody's nightmare packaged up as a little girl's fantasy. Reprehensible! Apparently we had seen all the good parts already on YouTube set to better music. This movie is just awful. Luckily, my tech savvy tot can watch it on my computer and she knows how to play the scenes of just the oddly beautiful unicorn running through a verdant forest over and over again. I cannot recommend this film.

The Last Unicorn DVD

Review For: The Last Unicorn (DVD, 2007, 25th Anniversary Ed.)

This movie is a classic and one that I have grown up with. I first saw it on the big screen when I was very young and loved it ever since. The Last Unicorn is animated which makes it appealing to children, but I believe that it is not a children's show. Don't get me wrong, it is appropriate enough, but some of the content can be very deep.

I purchased this DVD for my daughter's 5th birthday, and I know she will be surprised because she really likes this movie as well. I recommend The Last Unicorn to anyone who likes fantasy and magic. Also, Mia Farrow did the unicorn's voice and it was awesome!

The animation is very well done! Story is captivating!

The animation is great! The colors are beautiful too. I bought this because I was looking for a movie that my daughters would enjoy, one that wasn't so commercial. I was looking for something that they might look forward to watching again and again. The story is good, very well done. I just think it's too long to keep them interested. I bought this because for two other reasons, Jeff Bridges is one of the narrators and I saw the listing at almost $30 for the DVD, and I ended up getting it for much less. It was luck I think.
