I bought this book because I've always been interested in anything to do with The King Arthur Legend. This book had a different slant on it. You remember Merlyn was born old and became younger every year. In this book he comes back to King Arthur after many years to find him old, sick, depressed and alone. He is at his life's end after all the grand ideas he tried to give his people to make their lives better. His wife and best friend have betrayed him, his sister did a terrible thing and now his son (by her) is trying to push him from the throne.
It is a sad book but remembering it is fantasy keeps you from becoming involved to the point of being depressed. It's never been known for sure if King Arthur really lived. The final vote seems to be that he is a mix of several kings of the period. It's an adult book but I think any child of the age of ten and above would enjoy it as well. I did enjoy it and it really stands alone. If you had not read as many Arthur books as I have you will still enjoy the book, I think. It probably will make you want to buy some of the other books about him. The best, of course, is by Mallory. That one covers every thing. This book is good and leaves you wanting more.
It is well written and illustrated. I think it reminds us of the child in all of us. The child we once were when we first discovered books. That's not a bad thing. I recommend this book.
