Movie synopsis
THE BLOB is one of the quintessential films for lovers of those science-fiction/horror/monster/camp films of the 1950s. A red, gigantic, gooey, gelatinous glob arrives from outer space and proceeds to terrorize a small town. The more it eats, the more it grows. Local teenagers, who have witnessed its obscene display of hunger, are ignored until it seems that it's too late. Can the local bad boy (Steve McQueen, in his first leading role) save his 'burb from the sinister slime--and reform himself in the process? A perennial favorite of Saturday afternoon horror shows, the film is still a joy to watch, as the young McQueen battles his parents and the big protoplasmic hunk of Jell-O.

50's Horror Cult Classic AND Steve McQueen!

What could be better than a 50's horror/sci-fi film about a ... well, a killer blob from outer space? A 50's horror film about a killer blob from outer space - with Steve McQueen!

The 1988 remake was pretty good - of course this is coming from an 80's kid so any bad horror movie from the 80's is a classic for me - but no one can come close to Steve McQueen as the bad boy/hero. As usual with 50's horror, the special effect are not scary and the acting is not great but it is a fun movie worth the time and money.

Pretty simple story - meteor falls to Earth McQueen and girlfriend see it falling and decide to investigate. They find an old man who is infected with the blob and take him to the doc. Old man gets blobbed, so does the Doc. Police make fun of the kids for their wild story until it is too late when the movie theater gets attacked by the blob. Lots of running, screaming and gooey-Blob-goodness all over the place.

Check out the Criterion version if possible - has the best film transfer and extras. But if you just want to watch the movie - and I actually like gritty transfers for better "mood" - pick up any edition. This movie is worth it!

Oh and did I mention Steve McQueen is in it? (:

The Blob

Steve McQueen's presence helps make this one of the SciFi classics from the '50's. Teens battle a ball of slime from outer space and save the town. I liked the explanation and demise of the blob in this versiion much better than the '80's version and the special effects weren't bad either as the blob absorbed its victims, oozed down the movie screen and enveloped that old '50's style diner. Excellent for its era, but 'only' very good by today's standards, and still worth watching.

Beware the blob!

This is the first of the "teens save the world" flicks. Strike one. The dialog is often inane, and even Steve McQueen, in his first starring role, looks distracted. Strike two. The blob look like a leather sofa cushion on steroids but it isn't half as scary. Strike three. The image quality of my copy was awful. Strike four. This thing is waaaay out. Skip it - for once, the remake is better.

The Blob (Original) introducing Steven Mc Queen

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Despite the low-budget and low-tech effects, this Steve Mc Queen sci-fi classic showed him before he shaved regularly, as the promising young version of the great actor he would become during his short lifetime. A solid storyline and nostalgic glimpse of small-town life in America in the late 50's is worth the cost of the DVD alone. This movie still holds up as believable in concept, especially in these times of chemical and biological warfare. This movie has the threat coming from outer space in a fallen "meteorite", but the toxic world in which we live may hold similar unknown substances yet to be born. One you can show the kids without fear, charming in its contrast with todays more explicit carnage, still threatening in its possibility.
