A Reliable, Cost-Effective Solution for College and High-School Students

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The Texas Instruments (or 'TI' as it is commonly abbreviated) 84 is an exceptional calculator that is a MUST-HAVE for any high school or college student who is involved in high-level mathematics, engineering, and/or science pursuits. While not as advanced as some of it's successors, it still does the job - and does it well. In this review I will be breaking down some basic categories of the calculator - such as it's screen size, ease-of-use, portability, and battery life.

THE BEGINNING - "Why?"

The first question that I usually get asked about this product is: "Why did you buy it?" Most, if not all, of us know that there are calculators on the market that are far cheaper than the TI-84 and are seemingly more portable and, in some cases, more "fashionable." So, here's the story: I am currently a High School Senior who attends a Charter School around my area and for every year of school that I had attended the Administration released a supply list of recommended and required items that would/could be used throughout the year. One item on the "Required" list was the Texas Instruments TI-84 or the TI-83 (the choice was yours). Eventually, I bought the TI-84.

FEATURES - Technical Specifications

Before "delving-in" to my review of some of the components of the calculator, let's look at some of the specifications at-a-glance:

- Graphing calculator handles calculus, engineering, trigonometric, and financial functions

- USB on-the-go technology for file sharing with other calculators and connecting to PCs

- This "new" model adds more speed (a processor that's 2.5 times faster), more memory (24 KB RAM and 480 KB of Flash ROM), an enhanced high-contrast display (eight lines by 16 characters), and more beloved Apps

SCREEN SIZE

The screen on the TI-84 is not too big, nor too small, for working with graphs and larger sets of data - like those you can program into the unit's table. It has a great contrast ratio and is fully adjustable to fit the needs of the user. I keep my calculator at the fairly "stock" contrast and brightness settings, but if you want to switch them you may: all within the grasp of the "2nd" or the "Alpha" keys. The only issue that I have is reading the screen when outside or when you have high levels of light in the classroom. You'll probably want to invest in one of those sliding kickstand cases for that.

EASE OF USE

This calculator is truly easy to use. It has a great, full-sized keypad with lots of buttons that does lots of stuff. However, don't let this be intimidating. If you want to access a secondary function on the calculator, you can do so by pressing the "2nd" key on the keypad. Additionally, if you want to add letters or type out small messages to yourself (or to your classmates...) you, too, can achieve this: just press the "Alpha" button and let the typing begin.

COMPUTING POWER

This unit has more than enough power to do simple calculations and complex ones, alike. However, you may notice a slowdown when it is trying to draw a graph - especially if the result is large and complex.

PORTABILITY

Not much to say here: It's a calculator! And a big one at that. Don't expect this to fit in your pocket.

BATTERY LIFE

The unit has ample battery life that can easily surpass a few months with light use. However, for heavier users (lots of graphs and complex calculations), the battery life will be shortened. I have had to replace my batteries three times within two and a half months.

Great unit, overall!

Great Calculator

I bought 2 of these actually, the first cause i needed a calculator, the second because my first one got stolen. That should say two things, one that it is good enough to be stolen, and two that it is good enough for me to buy a second one.

For the money, this calculator is a great deal. It has plenty of memory, great screen clarity, great battery life, and the controls are fairly easy to get used to.

There are plenty of games you can find to add to the calculator, also its data cable is a simple mini-usb cable so if it doesn't come with one, or you loose it, its very easy to replace.

This calculator has almost 8 times the memory that the TI-83 has which means you can store more games, apps, and files on this calculator then the previous TI-83.
The TI-84 plus has great screen clarity, its very easy to read during low light situations and outdoor light situations.

Texas Instruments is the most popular brand of graphing calculators currently out there which means that you can transfer files between pers easily, and you can figure out problems easier than if you had a no name brand.

All in all, the TI-84 is a brilliant addition to the Texas Instuments Graphing Calculator family, and a worthwhile tool to anybody in school or work.

Hope it helps!
-Jack

ti-84 calculator

This calculator is good for my general chemistry course, except the price, I paid 110 for this calculator. This calculator is a highly specialized graphing calculator designed for the college student. It performs many advanced functions. It is excellent for math, science, & business classes. The TI-84 makes work a lot easier for students, because it has a USB connector. This enables students to transfer their work to a computer screen and print it, rather than write everything out by hand. It is a very wise investment for a new college student. Texas Instruments has been making these calculators for a very long time. They can be pricey if bought in college bookstores, but they can also be found reasonably priced at Wal-Mart, or even on the internet.

Good all around calculator

I began looking for a TI 84 since my calculus and statistics class require this in the fall. I began looking and pricing the ti84 now so I could possibly get a better deal than at office depot or anything. I paid 88 bucks for mine on ebay (new in box) where office depot priced the calculator at 129 and college wanted 150. I opted for the higher end ti84 silver edition. I wanted to get the best I could.
Now that I have it, I should have had one a LONG time ago. Loaded with financial apps (I am an accounting major) and able to literally do ANY math, this is the tool for the job. It has spread sheet software loaded on it already, and after downloading the conversion software from the TI site, I was able to load excel files from my computer to my calculator.
It seems there is LITTLE this calculator can't do. I can now see why the CPA exam, along with financial planner and analist exams wont allow these little machines for the test. I actually created a spreadsheet to do all my depreciation schedules on this calculator, and it works great!
Go for the silver edition. It has more options, and allows you to get custom cases and keyboard covers for it.

Excellent calculator !

This calculator is identical to the TI-84 Plus except that this "Silver" model has additional memory. It has the same functions as the TI-84 Plus. This model is excellent for all math up to and including all high school math, plus some college calculus. For most people, this calculator will suffice through college. Only more advanced engineers, scientists and financial experts would need something more.

In addition, this calculator is approved for use on most aptitude tests including SAT and AP mathematics.

I tutor high school mathematics, algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus and, while the TI-83 is adequate for anyone, I recommend that, if you can afford it, spend a few extra dollars and get the TI-84 Plus Silver.

Consult with the TI web site ( http://education.ti.com/educationportal/sites/US/nonProductSingle/graphing_course_comparision.html ) to see which of the "high school" calculators (TI-83 Plus, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus Silver, TI-89 Titanium, TI-Nspire) is right for your child's education level and your budget. For all high schoolers, I recommend the TI-83 Plus as a minimum.
