A decade after Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) destroyed the original Terminator, a second unstoppable killing machine (Arnold Schwarzenegger) arrives from the post-apocalyptic year 2029. But this time his mission is to stop an even deadlier Terminator, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), made entirely of shape-shifting liquid metal and determined to kill young John Connor (Edward Furlong), the future leader of the human resistance. Sarah, John, and the Terminator counter by going after the scientist responsible for developing Skynet, the computer system fated to destroy humanity, leading to an explosive and spectacular clash with the fate of humanity in the balance. Whereas James Cameron's original THE TERMINATOR was a low-budget marvel of efficiency and speed, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY is an action-packed blockbuster with some of the most amazing stunts ever filmed and ground-breaking, Academy Award-winning special effects. Star Schwarzenegger was paid in the form of a $15 million dollar jet to revisit his most famous role as the Terminator, this time made kinder and gentler against the silent, relentless T-1000.
Its really hard to remember just how influential Terminator 2 was back when it was released in 1991 - but it was so cutting edge, so different and so visually superb and new - that it was really mind boggling. Terminator 2 really changed the industry with the CG graphics and visuals - whether or not you love Arnold Schwarzenegger (and I do!!) - you owe it to yourself to see Terminator 2 because, if you love movies, this is an important film. And if you love action - Terminator 2 kicks BUTT. The action is unreal - Arnold is vintage Arnold with classic Arnold lines and muscles. Enjoy this one - and make sure to collect the trilogy. But if you don't trust me - trust these reviews:
"...When it comes to setting off fireworks, Arnold Schwarzenegger is a heck of a blowtorch....[T2] unloads a stunning arsenal of truly special effects..."
USA Today - Susan Wloszczyna (07/03/1991)
"...TERMINATOR 2 is well-stocked with the kind of wised-up, shoot-from-the-hip wit that characterized the first film....This is one director who really knows how to direct..."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (07/03/1991)
"...A swift, exciting special effects epic....[Schwarzenegger acts with] perfect aplomb..."
New York Times - Janet Maslin (07/03/1991)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day is most notable for being one of the first films to seamlessly combine a large amount of computer graphics -- in this case, the "morphing" technique -- with live action. Director James Cameron's bigger-budgeted sequel to his 1984 hit, Terminator, T2 capitalizes on Arnold Schwarzenegger's increased stardom by changing the persona of his indestructible cyborg character from creature of destruction to lovable protector. After a number of TV parts and supporting film roles, Linda Hamilton comes into her own as a believable action hero, expertly balancing human drama with a rough, taut physicality. Newcomer Edward Furlong is also quite good as her rebellious son. As with many of Cameron's films, however, the visual effects are what make the movie really stand out. Integrated into several lengthy action sequences, the indestructible molten-metal villain (played in human form by Robert Patrick) is audacious and exciting, enough so to avoid becoming stale even on repeat viewings.
While most have seen the movie (it has been out since 1991) and thought it was excellent or really could not stand it, I will just comment on the high definition (HD, Blu-Ray) version of Terminator 2: Judgment Day and afterwards, give my quick opinion of the movie itself.
Pros of Blu-Ray Version: 1) 1080p High Definition (HD) Blu-Ray media. 2) Movie audio tracks: 5.1 DTS-ES and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround EX. 3) Commentaries featuring James Cameron, William Wisher, and 26 members of the cast and crew.
Cons: 1) 1080p High Definition (HD) transfer from original film is okay but not awe-inspiring. There appears to be a slight graininess in the film in comparison to other Blu-Ray movies (new or similar age). However, we may have to consider the age of the film as well (or maybe the studio is just waiting to release another Blu-Ray version that has a better transfer, and thus getting the consumer to think about purchasing the same movie again...). 2) In comparison to the first version of the regular DVD (not High Definition), the menu system is not as impressive. I personally like the interactive menu systems currently on DVDs (where the main menu shows up, allowing me to navigate to the various functions of the DVD and with a clip of the movie in the background) and this Blu-Ray menu version just does not cut it for me. However, it appears that Blu-Ray movies in general appear to be less interactive on the main menu system, so this apparently is nothing new. Perhaps as Blu-Rays evolve, the menus may get more complex (complexity to me is great). This Blu-Ray has a sub-menu that allows you to go to any scene, etc.
I love the whole concept of the Terminator Series. I originally saw Terminator 2 in the theaters and thought to myself, "Wow! For someone to dream up that liquid metal man must be from a different planet!" The action scenes are (and always were) fantastic. The Terminator Series is truely one of the most original movie series in SCI-FI and ACTION genre films. Unfortunately, this Blu-Ray version just does not do the movie justice. Maybe next time...
Just see this movie OK! James Cameron delivered his first masterpiece with this movie, he blends the perfect blend of humor, ground breaking for the time special effects and character study. James Camerom gives us a vision of the future that invloves a twist from the first terminator movie and delivers it with humor, drama, and in some cases...a little bit of tenderness if you can belive it. This is basically a chase movie. One Terminator after John Conner with another Terminator trying to protect John with one breathtaking chase scence after another. A must for any scien fiction fan's collection.
