Movie synopsis
Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) are two brothers with a special talent. Well-versed in the supernatural after their father became convinced that their mother was captured by unholy spirits, Dean and Sam dedicated their young lives to hunting down these otherworldly terrors. But adulthood saw Sam drift away from these preternatural activities, instead choosing to settle down in a life of domestic bliss with his girlfriend. But when the Winchesters' dad goes missing, both Dean and Sam know what they have to do, leading to some epic cross-country trips as the brothers try to find their father. Naturally the ghostly spirits that haunt them throw more than a few obstacles in their way in this first season of episodes from the show.

Supernatural: More than meets the eye.

Review For: Supernatural: The Complete First Season (DVD, 2006, 6-Disc Set)

In fall of 2005 when the new television line-up was paraded out for all to see an overlying theme was prevalent in several new shows: horror. Surprisingly, the new genre has produced some of the most entertaining television in years. The WB, a fledgling network in comparison to its older siblings, has launched a television show that not only embodies the spirit of this new horror fascination, its very title defines the current obsession dominating the entertainment industry: Supernatural.
America’s newest preoccupation with death, life after death, and in general all things spooky have produced some pretty interesting television shows these past few seasons. The WB’s newest journey into the unexplained is a fiction drama called Supernatural that follows the journey of two brothers who travel the highways of the United States searching for the origins of unexplained tragedy. Every week Dean and Sam Winchester scour the Internet and various newspapers looking for mysterious crimes, bizarre accidents, and unsolved murders. The brothers travel every episode to a new location on an endless road trip with the purpose of silencing the evil that few only know about. Most of the time the brothers find themselves facing off against the inspiration of a well-known ghost or horror story. It’s when they find these urban legends or at least the ideas that inspire them that the plot line takes on a whole new level of interest. The fact that a show like Supernatural has a plot at all is amazing. The horror genre is not known for riveting story lines. In Supernatural the plot is detailed and focused and most often is the driving force behind any of the action. Sometimes the plot line can be so involving it becomes a character of its own, just as important, if not more than the show’s two male leads.
A theme addressed in almost every episode is family. Dean and Sam are brothers and when one is in trouble the other will stop at nothing to come to any rescue. John Winchester, the patriarch of this crusading clan isn’t around much. In fact, an on-going sub-plot of the first season was the brothers’ mission to find their father as he had gone missing on a demon hunt. As unusual as the Winchester family appears, when together, they are a strong force to be reckoned with.
Father/son issues, brother issues, lost love issues; general angst rules the relationships that dominate the main characters of this show. These men are human; they have very human problems even if what they do for a living is very inhuman. These problems, heightened by unusual circumstances, relate the characters to the show’s audience. It’s refreshing to see two brothers who care about each other, who miss each other and connect by way of a relationship not overcast by testosterone on television. The humanity of the show is just as important as the fantasy. It keeps the viewers involved.
This is one of the best shows that TV has offered the horror/ sci-fi/ fantasy community in a hell of a long time. After being frustrated by horribly written clunkers like LOST that just keep viewers positively “lost” in an ever changing plotline, Supernatural actually delivers on the mysteries it presents each week.Supernatural is a fun, fulfilling TV show worthy of praise! I hope that the viewers keep watching and show the big bad networks who’s really in charge (US!)& to give the fans what they want! SUPERNATURAL!

A great show that creates its own mythology

Review For: Supernatural: The Complete First Season (DVD, 2006, 6-Disc Set)

Supernatural is a show about two brothers who hunt various demons and other monsters on the back roads and small towns of the country in an attempt to locate and kill the "Yellow-eyed Demon" who murdered their mother. That's the show in a nutshell. If you're already a fan of the show, then you can stop reading now. If you have never seen the show, then trust me when I say this is one of the better shows on television.

The show begins with Sam and Dean Winchester trying to locate their father, John, who has gone missing while on a "hunting" trip. What John was "hunting" wasn't an animal but the demon who murdered his wife. They figure if they continue the "family business," they'll eventually locate their father. The different hunts take them through various small towns battling demons and urban legends.

This show takes what could have been easily a monster of the week premise and crafts its own rich mythology. Once you get into the show you'll understand the purpose of the Colt and it's mysterious 13 bullets, a shotgun that fires rock salt, and what happened on November 2, 1983. They consistently come up with new takes on old legends such as Bloody Mary, Hook Man, and Route 666. They also understand just how far out the material is and somehow they don't take themselves too seriously.

The relationship between Sam and Dean is exactly what you would expect from a dysfunctional family that has been hunting demons for over 20 years. The actors (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) play perfectly off of each other and a person could actually believe they were brothers. You can tell when they're being playful as well as when they're getting on each others' nerves just like a real family. The grounded realism their relationship brings is one of the keys to the show. That plus the truckload of weapons that they carry in the 1967 Chevy Impala just to deal with said demons. All to a soundtrack of 80's rock.

For you technical ones, this is the first season of the show and the set contains the first 22 episodes of the series on 6 discs showing a 1.78:1 aspect ratio, with English (2.0 Dolby Digital) language and multiple language subtitles. The extras contain deleted scenes, audio commentary from cast and crew, easter eggs, photo gallery and a couple of fluff featurettes.

If you're a fan of horror movies and/or the buddy cop genre, then you should enjoy this series. Once you get into this series you'll be hooked. (Pun definitely intended) I highly recommend this series and I think that you'll enjoy it as well.

Buffy's more mature older brother.

Review For: Supernatural: The Complete First Season (DVD, 2006, 6-Disc Set)

For anyone who shyed away from Buffy because of the teenager angle this show is for you.

Supernatural is about 2 brothers who take up their father's fight against evil supernatural forces. The episodes in season 1 primarily deal with American folklore. Most of us know the stories of the escaped crimial with a hook instead of a hand or the tale of Blood Mary. This show retells those classics with a fresh spin.

The show doesn't rely too heavily on special effects which is a good thing. Most TV shows, especially those on smaller networks cannot pull off big budget effects. Most every effect on Supernatural is done well, instead of overshadowing the story it aids in the telling.

Any good TV show lives or dies with it's actors abilities to make the viewer believe what they are watching. On a sci-fi type show this is even more important because the material is outside of the normal, everyday experience. Whoever cast the two brothers on the show deserves an A+. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki are completely believable as brothers and demon hunters. In many review I've seen Jensen receives the accolades while Jared is referred to as just being there. This is unfortunate and misguiuded in my opinion. Jensen's character Dean gets most of the good dialogue while Jared is the more understated, down to earth younger brother Sam.

Like the main characters the guest stars are very well done. From the father to the bad guys and every secondary character, the actors do a magnificent job. Fans of sci-fi/fantasy shows will recognize many of the guest actors in season 1 episodes of Supernatural.

If you are looking for a show with great writing and acting with a mix of sci-fi and horror this is definitely for you. Each episode is a mini thriller with just enough humor and sibling rivalry thrown in to round out the story.

Supernatural: The Complete First Season (2006, DVD)

Review For: Supernatural: The Complete First Season (DVD, 2006, 6-Disc Set)

If you're a fan of good tv featuring "things that go bump in the night", then Supernatural is for you. Season two had just began when I started watching the show, and I quickly became hooked. I had to purchase season one to catch up on the backstories. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles play Sam and Dean Winchester, estranged brothers brought together again by the disappearance of their demon-hunting father. As the search for their dad deepens, the supernatural experiences they encounter bring them closer together as Dean, who has assisted his father for years, helps Sam come to grips with the realization that this is the path he is meant to follow. The two are in stark, but perfect contrast to each other: big brother Dean's wise-cracking, hard as nails, black and white persona is offset by Sam's sensitivity and systematic approach to the situations they encounter. We see time after time that the brothers' greatest weakness, the love of family, proves also to be their greatest strength. As for the multitudes of ghoulies and ghosties the two must face along the way, we see old urban legends (Bloody Mary, Hook Man) brought to fascinating new life, along with the series' own macabre creations of terror. As Dean and Sam cruise the highways, searching for their father while battling evil, you'll be glad you came along for the ride.

Pretty Cool But Can Get Old

Review For: Supernatural: The Complete First Season (DVD, 2006, 6-Disc Set)

I watched the pilot for this show and was actually surprised at how good it was. I had not seen many tv shows that were actually scary but this one made me turn the light on. Actually recommended the show to someone who (like myself) is a big horror movie fan and they loved it too.

The family business is hunting supernatural forces. It all started when a woman is consumed by a fire on her bedroom ceiling, her husband goes looking for the force that killed her. Once their 2 kids grow up it is assumed they will all work together. But the youngest kid goes to college while his dad and brother are out there saving the world one person at a time. When dad goes missing and the youngest brother's girlfriend dies the same way as their mom, the two brothers join forces to figure out what is after their family.

The pilot is awesome, the next couple of episodes are pretty good as well. But after a few episodes it gets kinda repetitive and old. I am sure this is not what happens to everyone, but I am over the show and have no plans to watch the next season. Still, THIS dvd set is a nice addition to your collection - especially if you like shows like The X-Files. Both shows have great scripts and good production values.
